Yip, I wonder how many folk are still running ADSL1 modems?

Wonder if Chorus provide ISPs feedback on what customers are syncing at?

MurrayC: I'm in Shirley Christchurch and moved house last month but within the same suburb. Before I was with Telecom and was getting around 5 down and 0.5 up. Changed to Naked Broadband with VF and got a significant improvement:

Could of course be a bit closer to the cabinet or exchange...

You changed provider *AND* modem (from an old DSL1 modem to a new DSL2 modem) so obviously you'll have better speeds.

Again folks it's not Naked Broadband giving better speeds. There are other factors involved.

johnr: The OP was on a clothed Vodafone connection and then moved to Naked on the same line

I'd put a beer on the internal wiring being very poor. With a master filter to sort out the probable wiring issue the OP would probably see a further possibly signficant increase.

Wiring is a difficult issue in our home.

Built in 1992 or so and 100% concrete walls and floors with mass concrete fill in the block voids and steel rods.

Makes life very hard to alter or improve wiring.

Assuming your wiring is in series do you know where your modem is in relation to the demarc? If you've got naked DSL and can position the modem at the first jackpoint you could disconnect all other jackpoints. If the modem wasn't at the first jackpoint you could bypass the other jacks with scotchlok connectors.

What zone do you fall into on the Chorus coverage maps? 5/10/20 Mbps?

The first jack point is in a dumba**e place - 5 feet up a wall next to a door! There is no furniture anywhere near it and it is some 12 metres from my office, with no way to get Ethernet cables to the Mac other than just trailing them across the kitchen floor.

sbiddle: Chubb AFx panels support Contact ID or SIA for monitoring. There are lots of options for adapters to convert these to IP.

If the panel will do Contact ID then call Brian at Alarm NZ and get a postix box.  Saved me 66% a month on monitoring costs.

D

I am awaiting a reply on that!!

freitasm: There would be plenty of problems that could still impact speed. If the OP post the modem DSL stats (which we asked already two times before) then people will be able to say if even more speed can be achieved.

The OP is not enough of a Geek to know where he's find those...! ;-)

There is no need for Chorus to provide feedback, the live details from the ISAM are available for any ISP to look at in SPM.

You just use a web browser and browse the gateway address on your network.

http://www.speedguide.net/faq_in_q.php?qid=301

As you're using a mac you'll need to google how to find out the gateway address for a mac as the 'cmd' idea won't exist on your mac.

Thanks Steve, that's what I meant by 'feedback'.

So really, people could just be phoning up their ISP and having a talk.

I really should write a blog about why having more speed is important.

90+% of internet users would not care as long as they are connected to the net and trademe / Facebook opens and email is working they would not care if they got 1Mbps or 50Gbps

Not sure what stats are required but here are the ones I can see:

CurrRate (kbps) Upstream 896  Downstream 7616

Max Rate (kbps) Up 1344   Down 8576

NoiseMargin (dB) Up 20.0  Down 13.5

Attenuation (dB) Up 9.0   Down 7.5

Power (dBm)  Up 12.3   Down 13.8

Yip, well done, that's what the boys are after.  I'm sure someone will be back to comment on that lot shortly, I'm not an expert on that stuff.

Ya, I didn't care about such stuff either until people started to educate me about the benefits.

Just out of interest, how does this happen John?  If the customer has a spanking new DSL2+ modem, does the system not just figure it out?
