DonGould: iirc Auckland didn't want HFC. They didn't want lines on the power polls, they only want under ground cables, which is really expensive to install (read 10 times the cost).

Chorus will be putting fibre in eventually.

If thats the case, thats a real shame really :( tbh it's kinda a silly move by auckland counsel if thats the case

Why is it a silly move? Many areas don't have overhead power lines anymore, and it makes little financial sense to fund deploying a cable network, with FTTH happening (which imo is superior).

What poncy part of Auckland do you live in?? Apart from new sub divisions and some main roads power and phone distribution is still via poles so slinging TCs cable wouldn't have been a problem.. I live in Pt Chev and apart from some of Pt Chev road all being underground the rest is above ground..

I believe it was a NZ Herald miss information campaign which the AK Council bought into that killed any chance of TC moving into Auckland..

Is ponsnobby a likely answer? :P

I'm just joking here, but I can see where people are coming from with not wanting 'more' cables etc. imho it's not a big deal though really.

What a poor, misguided fool he was. Cable in Auckland would have represented some serious competition in the ISP market.
Still, the cable network then has been surpassed by other technology (fibre, for example).

Edit: just read the last link, the Brian Rudman article, holy crap, talk about scaremongering. He must have objected to the proposed cables...blocking his view of the existing cables.

Yes and no.

I'd say cable networks and the DOCSIS standard in general still probably have a good 20 year life due to the fact they're so common in the US.

DOCSIS can easily sustain 1Gbps throughput with bonding but you need to have node sized scaled to suit these sorts of speeds.

From what I've heard Vodafone see no future in the current cable networks in Wellington/Kapiti and Christchurch which is a shame because it's still a fantastic delivery medium.
