cws82us: yes
flixide: Hey NikT and others if you could help me out.
So Fibre is available in my area now, and was just wanting to get a bit more information on it to see whether it is worth it or not. I called up vodafone to see if it was available, and the consultant recommended that I get the ultra fast cable instead, so then that got me thinking.
Chorus says:
Network capability:
UFB fibre up to 100 Mbps
Broadband > 20 Mbps (with the right modem and plan)
Broadband > 10 Mbps
Vodafone: (Probably go with them since have sky etc with them already)
- Ultra fast cable 50mbps, for $105 a month or $30 more to upgrade from 50mpbs to 130mpbs. (Unlimited data)
- Fibre 30mps same price and same price to upgrade from 30mpbs to 130mpbs (Unlimited data)
So in theory is it better just to go with the cable, as it is the same price and is 20mbps faster (30mbps fibre vs 50mbps cable)
Thanks

If you live in a cable area, Vodafone will refuse to offer you UFB.

NikT: It is correct that fibre is not available where cable is. As John has said, work is being done to upgrade the cable network at present - watch this space. :)
Right now I'm in the middle of waiting on consenting and feasibility for a fibre install & wish I could get cable.

So you mean to tell me that if I am able to get cable in my area then fibre is not allowed in my area?
The chorus map says fibre is available in my area, and when I called up vodafone, they said I'd be able to get fibre installed?

flixide: Ok thanks for clearing that up mate
What is this enable fibre?
In the future will it be possible to bypass the cable and go straight to fibre with Vodafone?
I'm thinking of getting cable or fibre, I'm currently on the entertainment plan with Vodafone, only adsl2 so I'm wanting a big upgrade in speeds

Enable is the company that provides UFB fibre in Christchurch, Waimakariri and Selwyn Districts.
Depending on what speed ADSL you get now, basic fibre could easily be 2-3x faster, less if you have a really great connection and more if it's crap. Cable is likely to be faster again because of the current plans they offer(50/130 vs 30/100 ), but that may well change in the future.
flixide:
Ohk i'm in Wellington.
I might just go for ultra fast 50 cable plan with vodafone (50mbps), or will look around to see if other ISPS are offering good fibre plans. It really does suck how fibre is not available if cable is...Wouldn't most places have cable available anyways, so fibre with vodafone is basically impossible? It should really explain on the website about this....as for most users who don't even check forums etc will have no clue and they will just be thinking yay fibre is available and I can get it.....
Orcon is looking good tbh, no capped speeds etc. $115 for the 100mbps plan, which is $20 cheaper than vodafone anyways
Wellington is serviced by Chorus for fibre (As you probably know!) so no issues there. There are some places that have been unable to get cable due to the cost or complexity of installation, or the network not being rolled out in that suburb, but thanks to subsidised fibre installs, are able to get this instead.
