But Passport is so much simpler. Why can't Vodafone just roll that out here?

Infact why wouldn't they just use the Vodafone World model that Australia use?

Traveller is just such a bad deal I can't believe anybody with half a braincell could come up with a concept that is so bad.

Thanks for the link - managed to look at the info after entering an on-account mobile number but on trying a couple of SupaPrepay numbers to login had received the message

"Not a Vodafone customer yet? Visit vodafone.co.nz for details on our great plans, awesome deals, and the latest phones. "

I think it will really depend on where you intend on travelling as to if Traveller will suit or not. For example, if you travel mostly to Australia you are better off on traveller, however if you perfer to sit on the beach in Fiji, then $5 + Normal Rate is about double what the rate is now.

Does anyone know if you can opt in and out of Traveller as your travel needs suit?

Also, does anyone know if Traveller applies to Maritime roaming on cruise ships, which are currently horribly expensive

Clarification on Vodafone Traveller:

When roaming on Vodafone Traveller in
Australia, people will now pay the same standard rate as when they use their mobile in New Zealand – on any network. Previously, this deal only applied for people using Vodafone Australia’s network.
 The four Vodafone Traveller Zones:
Zone 1AustraliaStandard domestic rate  for outbound calls
Zone 2Europe$2 plus standard domestic rate per minute for outbound calls
Zone 3North America & Asia Pacific$3 plus standard domestic rate per minute for outbound calls
Zone 4Rest of World$5 plus standard domestic rate per minute for outbound calls

Vodafone Traveller is available on Supa Prepay. Old plans such as Get and Mobilise do not qualify but we recommend people on these plans consider our Talker, Txter and Mega offers which provide good value for money.

The text price (80c) is an approximate average of the various rates to send text messages previously.
The cost per minute to recieve calls is actually lower than the average of the old roaming rates.

An offical "Vodafone New Zealand" now!

Funny account motormouth is traveller compatible but prepay motormouth is not.

I put a much more detailed and accurate pricing schedule in my blog.

I think you need to stay on it for 30 days before reverting back

I don't recall Freitasm notifying us of an Official VF presence on these forums, therefore I think your assumption is incorrect.

Hi all,

Warning: OFFTOPIC

I've been away for the week (at a conference about blogging no less) so let me jump in here and introduce Alison Sykora, head of communications for the company. Alison has set up the VNZ account so we can have an official presence on Geekzone. Up till now I've been posting under my name and I'll continue to do so but we felt it important we have an official name as well. People should think twice before sending their account details/name/bank account number directly to some poster on Geekzone just because they say they work for the company. I always stick in my mobile number so people can call to check first but we felt an official log-in was important.

So - if you prefer talking to me, that's fine. If you want the official line then we now have this log-in so any of us can post to you when I'm away.

We will put our names in the post from the official account so you know who's talking.

How's that?

Cheers

Paul

I hate the idea of subsidizing other people's phone calls because they are too inept to manually select the cheapest network in the country they are going to. Neither do I like the idea of subsidizing the costs of calls other people make in countries where the government treats international phone calls as a source of tax revenue rather than a facilitator of business. I realise that in business, some customers always effectively subsidize others by needing less customer support, not using all their minute entitlements, or whatever. But this goes too far.

Most of all, I hate the idea of paying $0.80c for the transmission of a 1120-bit text message, which, if it was priced like regular data, even at the Vodafone UK data roaming rate of $10.00 per megabyte (which I consider to be exhorbitant), would cost $0.001489. (Not including signalling and god knows what, and my calculation could be wrong, but my point is clear, right?) SMS has always struck me to be an incredibly overpriced service, especially given that they often don't arrive in a timely manner or at all. I think this price increase is just crazy.

Thirdly, why on earth does Vodafone send its customers a special code to unlock their personal login to this, that, and the other? I have been registered on the Vodafone Web site and logged in regularly since its inception about 7 years ago. Then, a year or so ago, came the v.box campaign which required a separate login. Now we have the Vodafone Traveller campaign which again requires a separate login. Congratulations Vodafone! You have got me to the point where I am nitpicking!

I really don't think it's a matter of customers being too "inept"... some handsets make it easier than others and some simply swap to the strongest signal when you switch them on.

The customers want simplicity and telcos have been accused of using confusion as a marketing tool in the past (you may recall). Simplicity is what the new Traveller scheme is all about. One price to make calls, one price to receive, one price to TXT.

If you don't like it, and if you want to manually select networks and change around to get the deal you think you can get, then by all means, stick to the existing structure - Traveller is opt in for precisely that reason.

Cheers

Paul
