Jase2985: good to see the budget was stuck to, could have saved yourself some money and brought the DSL-N66U as that supports ADSL VDSL and fibre and is only $20 more if your lucky

for the price you spent on both devices you could have almost got a Asus DSL-AC68U and had a less complicated setup

Having a combo device would have completely missed the point. VDSL and Fibre are not available in her area and won't be for a long time. At this point i'm just repeating myself.

nakedmolerat: Well that was an ancient modem/router she had!

Wireless G! 10/100mbit! Any newer setup will always be much better than that!

You can't compare that to the newer router. Even hg659 will be miles better than that!

I bet most of the 'unstable issue' is actually the wireless coverage.

Yeah, it sucked, but the ISP refused to replace it for free and their cheapest option was $150, better to buy 3rd party and get something that's proven. The coverage was fine, it just drop/stopped working every once in a while and the only solution was a modem power cycle.

Having the WiFi/Router and DSL modem separate and having a good tweakable router makes things much nicer. Now the WiFi settings scan be tweaked/diagnosed without worrying about dropping the modem connection.

I think that most people would consider that a very strong argument for using a single device. smile

(I use a DSL-N66U with DD-WRT so I'm not biased against the Asus)

DD-WRT is unsupported on combo devices... Also if/when Fibre/cable whatever become available she can keep the router only the modem would nee to be replaced, much easier upgrade path since all the relevant  configuration resides on the router not the modem. By the time an upgraded service is available in I'm almost positive all the combo devices mentioned here would be considered obsolete.

I also don't understand all this argument about complexity, I had everything configured within an hour, and then I did a backup of the configuration so if the router gets reset for whatever reason all the settings can be restored. Sans any tweaking for speed/QOS that may be done later, that's it, we're done, nothing else has to be touched.
