Perhaps my idea of best efforts differs slightly. I was meaning more along the lines of if I decide to make topology changes 18 months down the track which necessitate you changing your IP addressing then thats unfortunately what will happen.

If you have the option of using a hostname instead of IP address, which you do potentially in some of the scenarios you list below, then having to potentially change IP address a year or two down the track, vs paying additional for IP addressing (which the network provider will endevor to manage in a fashion so you have much less likelyhood of having changes) is probably worth it to many individuals/organizations.

Me too. I'm not charged for a static IP at the moment, and if I was I would probably ditch xnet. I'm happy with them but not willing to pay $10 a month for something I can get elsewhere for free yes there is dyndns but its a pain in the arse and static ip makes routing easier if you have interesting setups like I do (openwrt using pptp vpn authentication to a alcatel adsl modem in a sort of half bridge mode). I wouldnt care about a "best effort" static ip. If i was moving house etc.. its fine if the IP changes (as long as I know in advance) or even if from time to time (say every 6 months or so) they need to change the number as long as theres some notice.

one of the reason I referred several friends to xnet is for the advantages of having a static ip (easy to connect to them if we are playing a game through VPN or if I have to try and help fix a computer problem for them) and those referrals have led to several (at least 6; mum, dad, parents in law, work mate, 2 friends I play CS with) customers for xnet. I wont be recommending so readily now... as my life just got harder with the whole "please type whatismyip.com into your address bar","where is that"

cokemaster: Its much easier just to chuck an IP range at a group of users than it is to manually set each one up, one by one...

Also because you have users coming and leaving all the time, it would be an administrative headache if you didn't have a system to release and reserve IP's...

I'm sure its also easier to force everyone to have interleaving turned on rather than allow it to be turned off... but then guess what all of a sudden your one step away from being a xtra clone and lost the Xnet identity (well maybe not quite till the engineers stop posting on geekzone and you get yahoo bubble but anyway..)

Now understanding some of the problems:

I would happily have a free static IP with the following restrictions:

a) Can only login to my account at my house.
b) IP changes when I move.
c) IP changes whenever DSLAM changes are required to suit xnet.
d) happily incur a "setup" fee for the static ip to help cover any manual work costs. (including if I move again and want a static IP).

huh? I don't see any personal attacks there.

I'd have to agree with rphenix in his last two posts in this thread. Sure, the part about Xtra wasn't necessary but the rest of it contained valid points and opinion.

The way I saw it was that he was referring to me. However upon reading it again, it could be seen as referring to worldxchange (clarification would be good in future)

FYI - Xtra do provide free static IP addresses on their pro plans.

I know some of Xtra's plans give a free static IP but not everyone has those plans of course. The mom/pop plans (i.e low data usage) plans dont and these are the harder people to try and get things like currently assigned Dymanic IP from when your trying to do a vnc or remote desktop/remote assistance connetion to try and fix something hehe.

What I meant by the Xtra comment in my prior post is that Xnet have always had a different feeling as far as customer service goes with changing interleaving upon request, giving static IP's freely on all plans, Helpdesk people who dont sound tired and actually want to help they were all signs of good customer support and gave you the feeling you werent just another account number!

I'm trying to say while on the face of it it might appear to cost Xnet more for static IP's for their residential customers there is at least 6 accounts they have now that they didnt before and its because of these "little things". Not to mention my workplace just purchased a new VOIP PABX and it was my previous dealings with Xnet that influenced my decision to purchase WxC SIP Trunks.

Thanks for the comments and feedback guys, as we said sometime people are not going to like what we have to offer but there are commercial decisions to be made, we do listen to constructive feedback and note your comments.
