nicks:

For example, would we see a new Trans-Tasman telco removing roaming rates across the Tasman as a point of difference but needing to raise them in other parts of the would due to loss of scale.

Well Vodafone AU don't charge roaming rates in NZ - you just use your plan rate / mins.

Vodafone NZ simply don't need to offer a deal like that because there is no competitive need for them to sacrifice the revenue - they already have the best roaming option by far out of the networks in NZ.

The irony of all of this is that ~10 years ago when VF NZ and AU wanted to scrap roaming charges they were basically told off the record by both the ACCCC and Commerce Commission that such a move would be deemed anti competitive, which is the whole irony of competition regulators who's job is not to ensure competition in a marketplace, not necessarily the best deal to the customer.

A possible scenario In a few months Telstra would be clear to buy Spark without ComCom complications and Vocus buying Vodafone Australia and New Zealand and 2D left alone.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

The irony is which is that 20 years ago Telecom NZ buying into Telecom Australia when privatisation was being considered was given serious thought.

I would hope not - certainly not on their cable network, anyway. If customers connected to that are unhappy with the crappy performance now, it makes the mind boggle to think what a price increase would make them do!
