dman: talking on a phone is very similar to talking to a friend in a car, nobody is going to ban that

No. You need both hands to drive safely. Unless you are using a handsfree you will have one hand holding the phone. I've seen people not indicating because they were holding a stupid phone. I've also seen people acting like contornionists to be able to change gears - leaving the steering wheel unattended because of a stupid phone.

dman:
txting can be done without looking at the phone at all if you are a person who txts heavily, and can be done in bits like while waiting at the lights

This is so wrong. Some younger people have no common sense at all and believe they are invencible and will continue to send SMS while driving.

I agree with you freitasm that you can easily pull up situations where txting/calling should NOT be used in.

such as while taking many turns and varying speeds with an automatic at the same time, obviously a silly idea. but also there are times when it is fine, long straights on quiet roads are a good example. or while in a traffic jam and you are not moving at all for hours

this just shows how it is bad for the government to stampede in to our private lives and plaster laws all over the place because of what they believe is "good for you"

Long straights on quiet roads are not immune to vehicles/pedestrians/animals moving out in front of you without prior warning. In such a situation delaying your reaction by even a fraction of a second can be the difference between life and death.

To some extent I can agree with your comment about being in a stationery vehicle in heavy traffic, but often people seem reluctant to put the phone down as soon as they start moving.

Lets legislate against young people doing stupid things then while we are at it! Laughing

If legislation were the solution to lifes woes then we would all be living in utpoia by now. Education and changing somethings social acceptance is a far more elegent and ultimately more effective approach IMHO.

yup, if we are just going to ban all possible stupid things young people might do we will be banning 19 year olds from having sex next

really I see this whole thread as being completely unrelated to tech stuff and all coming down to what flavor of politics do you subscribe to. do you prefer leaving giving the individual their own personal freedom to live their lives or do you prefer the government to stick their noses every little detail of your own life and to give you good hiding should you stay away from what the powers that be deem is "good for you"

like I said, this discussion really does all boil down to politics ;)

they want to put on a good "public" face, as this boost sales

plus they still want approved handfree sets to be used, which of course they would have to sell heaps of to all those people who don't have any....
