kiwifidget:
I have a landline as I have next to no cellphone signal.
I think that's a reasonable excuse.
Am trying to work out different set up scenarios, so all suggestions welcome.
It is a good excuse. You could also use Bria on a smartphone, with voip over wifi.
hairy1:
You could get a Unifi or similar to handle all the wifi...

As it is POE you can position it in the house where you like...
@hairy1 how is that AP different from this slightly cheaper one?

There is a good comparison chart here:
http://www.4gon.co.uk/ubiquiti-unifi-uap-product-comparison.php
Just the range difference between those two. I have the LR and it covers the whole house adequately. I always had the backup plan of buying a second one and turning down the transmit power if it didn't cover the whole house.
Cheers, Matt.
My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.
Thanks Matt,
I know that not all PoE Ubiquiti APs work with the PoE port on the Edgerouter.
But how do you tell which ones do and dont?

I have managed to get 38 devices connected to my HG659b.
20 wired, and 18 wifi.
I had to shuffle some wifi devices between 5GHz and 2.4GHz to get them all on.
Only being able to see 32 in the router makes managing more devices difficult.
By connected I mean I could ping them all from my laptop, I presume they could all access the internet. I would need to grow a lot of extra arms to verify that.
As an experiment I turned off 2.4GHz on the HG659b and enabled it on an old TPLink router running in bridge mode.
The wifi devices connected to the TPLink show up as ethernet devices on the HG659b and seem to be excluded from the 16/32 wifi limits that @Morm mentioned.
So this may be one way around the limitation, just install a separate Wifi Access Point.
This is going to be my next move, install a dual-band WAP (UnifiAP? will it work with a HG659b?) and see what happens the next time the Mongolian hordes come for the weekend.

Hey @kiwifidget,
The Ultra Hub supports a whole lot more connected devices than the HG659, I can send you out one of those if you're willing to give us some useful feedback? PM me your account details if you're interested.
