Linux:

@DrDee Do you want to share those numbers so others can add them?

Linux

If you use something like truecaller (unsure if that has an android version), it makes and updates a contact called spam that is updated from the internet with other peoples reports, and you can report other numbers.

Yeah thats what "Call App" appears to do as well, becomes a "global" phonebook. I uninstalled it though, had a couple of annoyances that bugged me.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.truecaller   That the one you referring to ?

Mmmhm. It trolls the internet if it has a connection on linkedin and so on for details

Often brings up people calling me from overseas companies I was expecting to, and spot on with their details. Some wrong when it's a trunk outgoing CID or reused number

Some people say steer clear cause it uploads all your contacts to the cloud etc etc due permissions - pretty sure it doesn't (I can't find myself on there) -  needs access as it has its own contact list and call logs you can use as default android ones that lookup your contacts.

Yeah I use the ios version of that.  I can't remember the permissions it has.  But know it can write to my contacts lists, as it updates one contact to add spam numbers to.  Not sure how I got on to it.  It may have been a magazine or something.

Samsung handsets seem to have a built in anti-spam service. I report any such calls and the numbers are automatically blocked at the same time.

I initially tried that but the problem is, the number changes and the phone still rings.

If you use the do not disturb with the exception of your contact list, the phone does not ring or take a message.

I had it set that way for a month and recently switched off dnd and receive no spam at all now.

Installed Truecaller to have a look at it.  I looked at it.  I uninstalled it again...

For a product that seems to have "anti-spam" as it's major selling point, it clearly didn't do a good job - none of the calls / texts in my recent phone history that HAVE come from overseas SPAM numbers were marked as spam; but ALL of the texts it marked as "spam" where from numbers that are in my opinion useful (for example, my bank's Internet 2FA; Vodafone (I was overseas roaming recently), etc)...

I'll stick to my manually-configured "NoPhoneSpam" app, thanks.

---

I've also noticed in the last couple of days some "local" numbers coming up now - 025 and 028 prefixes, which I don't think are normally used these days...

As a FYI the +44 22(x) UK area code is an invalid area code. Ofcom the UK dial plan regulator confirms this if you read the UK numbering plan at the following link.

https://www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0013/102613/national-numbering-plan-june-2017.pdf

I was receiving a heap of these (like about 3 or 4 every day) to my spark mobile so I complained about it to Spark Investigations team on 0800-809-806  ... "Oh there's nothing we can do about it because... blah blah blah"

I then pointed out to the Spark dude (or do we call them ninja's these days... oh hang on thats vodafone who have ninja's, spark just have dudes) that most if not all of these calls use an invalid caller ID ie +4422 , 025, 028 etc and are therefore obviously spoofed caller ID from numbers that do not and can not ever exist.

And that surely in 2018 their network should have the ability to block calls that originate from an area code that does not exist. Hmm he said, I'll look into that

Miraculously from the following day on I never (touch wood) received a single call again from a +44 22 number. Coincidence much?

I love it when you can do the carriers job for them and provide a solution that is so blindingly simple even the geniuses at Spark can't work it out.

I have 4 of these fake spam callers that have left a message on my voice mailbox. Funny thing i've never setup a voice mailbox.

So how can they leave a message?

It's just going to get worse. Best switch off your mobile and move back to smoke signals.
