hio77:

Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't steamcli single threaded?

I haven't actually looked at a pcap, but watching iftop it looks like it downloads from multiple sources in parallel. Still, I don't know how well it compares to actual Steam downloads using the Windows client.

So an update:

I went ahead and bought a RT-AC58U (Little trouble setting it up but eventually figured it out, in fact I'm worried I'm still connected to the Orcon line but all my IPs appear to be associated with Vodafone so it shouldn't be the case) and I'm happy to report that my speed is no longer being limited. I'm getting up to 60MB/s speeds from Steam now which is good (Much better than 8MB/s!). It's kinda a weird issue to have but thank you all for help solving this problem! If any other issues prop up I'll post in this thread again.

Interesting results...

Did you do anything special with the home hub? Routing? Forwarding?

Nah, nothing was done with the UltraHub, there was some port forwarding but those were gone when I reset the router, which still had the issue anyway.

Great to hear you've got it sorted, although now I'm really curious what fixed it. Maybe it was the new router, maybe it was unplugging the old one for a bit which triggered a new IP address, maybe you've now got IPv6 disabled, maybe you're connected differently now... who knows. Still, happy to hear it's working.

FYI for those who were asking about how I was testing the download speed, see this Github repo.
