I'm a bit concerned about the thing they say on the site of having to walk your house in 90 seconds. There is no way that I could get around the whole section here in 90 seconds, let alone to all the other places I use the landline cordless nearby like down at the waters edge.

Perhaps Vodafone will supply you with a moped or segway to do use while defining your zone?

gmball: Can anyone confirm what the zones are?, are they the same as Vodafones Home phone local calling zones?, ie I live in Botany (manukau City), so my local calling zone is from Manukau in the south to the North Shore in the North, would this mean that my Vodafone local zone was the same, I very rarely leave this zone, so the $40 for unlimited national calling is a very attractive option if this is correct....
Can anyone confirm the local zone boundaries?

Local zone appears to be as far as you can walk/move in 90 seconds. It counts down from 90 seconds when you "define your zone", however that works.

Edit: Just read this and am now very confused, how the hell does this work? I thought it would've been by cell tower or something. Tempted to try driving around the block within the 90 seconds... :p

Nice try but this will not work as the system is very smart!

Couple of questions in the list about how it works...

You sign up for the service.
You walk around the boundary of your house/flat/property/what have you and set your zone.

When you walk into that zone you're on your home phone number. Walk out of it and you're on the mobile number again.

Paul - I understand that part, but I meant, technically how does this work. It can't be done by GPS obviously, and triangulation isn't that precise. I hope it's been well tested...

Well, some of us will be assigned to camp outside particular addresses and follow you around... for the rest we have our fleet of black helicopters.. but you know about those, right?

Seriously, it's all to do with cellsites and knowing where you are via triangulation. Doesn't need GPS or satellites or black helicopters.

(For those that didn't get it, I'm joking about the helicopters and the camping out. Will knows what I'm talking about).

I see as part of the new "branding exercise" they're now bright red helicopters, and the commandos are also wearing bright red. Not so stealthy anymore, Paul.

As for camping outside houses following people around - if it was Juha saying things like this, I'd actually look out my window just to be sure...

As a side note, will this service require you to be on a 3G cellsite at home? 3G sucks here (in the middle of Ponsnobby, how ironic)

Good point,

On the hibiscus coast, there is no 3g signal, so thats another 300,000 aucklanders who also cant use the service if it requires 3g coverage.

Local Zone works on 2G as well as on 3G so you've got no worries there...

And a quick note about the zone you're setting...

You walk around inside the house to set the zone. The movement makes it more accurate because the network sees how many sites you're attaching to as you go.

If you head out and go for a drive to get the biggest area you possibly can, you end up with a very inaccurate zone (attaching to sites that are quite remote from each other) and run the risk of it not working as advertised...
