So I'm thinking I must have been connected to Matakana when I got the higher speeds...even though Matakana is further away.

I'm pretty sure one of the Techs said there was a difference in the strength/power of Matakana's Cell Tower compared to Snells Beach.

Matakana has 3x carriers, so significantly more capacity. Maybe the Snells Beach tower was down at the time of your install.

coffeebaron: You are connected to Snells Beach.

not sure which side of the tower 86 lands on, but that's exactly as it sounds. Hitting a different tower.

That particular tower will do a max rate of about 150/50 with load, resource blocks allocated elsewhere, mobile users etc 30mbit isn't too bad honestly.

so, options...

work with what you have..

1. hope vodafone will upgrade that tower (likely as it's only L700 right now - they normally purchase rsm licensees pretty early though)

2. see if it would make logical sense to do a repoint of the antenna?...

3. Switch providers.

all the spark towers there are atleast 2CA if not 3CA. another two towers coming up too.

2D have decent loadouts there too.

They all looked better than the Vodafone option to me.
I thought RBI was all meant to be shared everyone happy in bed ordeal, So a Spark customer there may get much better service than a Vodafone and say a 2D

Been out of touch with it for a while.

Are there tools available to work out how to align the antennaes with a particular cell tower. I guess knowing the exact location of the tower would help.

I'd start with some GPS coordinates of your house, cell tower and then employ the trusty compass and work out the bearing and it won't be too hard :) You will need to find the bearing for magnetic north or close enough to it anyway.

GoodSync. Easily back up and sync your files with GoodSync. Simple and secure file backup and synchronisation software will ensure that your files are never lost (affiliate link).

OK, you're certainly not where I expected, so I can see why this has happened. Pretty much it would have been by chance that you camped on to the Matakana tower (if that is the other tower you were on). You could possibly attempt to realign antenna, but beware this is at your own risk and I am not recommending you do so. I accept no liability if following the suggestions below makes your connection worse.

1. Make sure before anything, note / mark the current direction of antenna.

2. Power off modem. Rotate antenna 20degrees towards north. Power on modem, wait a couple of minutes and test. Also check stats, has anything changed? This adjustment should help favour the Matakana tower, but if Snells Beach is still dominant, then it could stay camped on there and be worse.

3. If 2. didn't help, you can try aligning North. Again power off modem during realignment.

4. if 3. didn't help, try 180degress away from original direction

5. If none of the above helped, return to original.
