Does anyone who was in the playground in 1986 even know who Dick Tracy was?!

Anyone who has spent much time in the UK/EU or the USA will easily appreciate just how far behind VF (and Telecom) in fact are here - and just how much they charge for it.

Chompchomp: Are you guys paranoid? Thanks for correcting the typo, and obviously thanks for correcting me on my horrendous grammatical errors. So 'ya'll' isn't a word anymore? Crap. Maybe I hang out with Americans too much. Appologies also, I agree with the moderator, I should be way more nicerer in my first post. Friends? Cool.

Anyways, on another note, how come a lot of people on this website are grumpy with Vodafone? I'm guessing a good majority of geekzone users understand tech systems and maintenance coding etc and surely if said users know all this then VF should be given a fair amount of slack.

I understand that all we (myself included) want is for our texts to get through without delay and for 3G to be up and running in every part of this awesome country and for VF to be focusing more on mobile data systems blah blah blah. But do you guys remember what it was like playing in the schoolground pretending we had Batman/Dick Tracey style wrist communicators on? Well I did anyway and I have to say that since those crazy, heady days of '86 we've come a long way. We should be congratulating VF and Telecom for their achievements. Round of applause please!!!!

Sigh. You must be new around here. :) I also remember those heady days, 23 years ago when I was just leaving school, exciting times they were. Competition was brand new, BellSouth was building a network, but nowhere ready to launch. Broadband was a few years away from reality with Telecom (NZ Post woot!) but surprisingly still keeping the $20/GB pricing from launch day all these years later. At least some things never change :)

I have had a mixed sense of dread and hate for all Telco's over the years for various reasons because they can grind my day to a halt so easily, first telecom with their multiple day outages while they were still figuring out how to design robust, multifault tolerant networks and then Vodafone as they overstuffed and priced their network while papering over the problems with some of the most emotive advertising seen in this land for quite some time.

Currently Vodafone makes me happy because this month is the month I can now make and receive calls in my apartment in Parnell. (seriously) it's the little things :-)

I like Orcon mainly because of the logo, and the little slingshot guys creep me out, but getting a terabyte of data for signing up 5 friends kinda rocks.

At least Slingshot stopped using that patronising woman in the adverts!

Telecom clearly think that their mobile customers are all children under 14 or adults with learning difficulties - those ads with the stuffed toys are an insult to the intelligence.

I can never work out why it is necessary for anyone to work out how to build (for example) a decent network. Look around - steal the design from the USA or UK or Australia. Why re-invent the wheel all the time?!

Let us hope that these "All New - Much Better Than Before, Honest" plans appear soon.

Mobile comms are good value in NZ! Yeah, right.

I work at a IT company which does most of the advertising agencies, but I'm not sure who did those ads, the current Telecom on 'McCallam and Partners' was actually shot in the offices of their advertising agency :-) I've heard the song so much on the adds that when I hear it on the radio that's all I can think of.

I have a sneaking suspection that the father/girl ad was shot in Torbay (Auckland), it looks like the toll (spelling?? island attached to mainland at low tide)

I don't think it's that we don't have access to the technology, know how or resources to build reliable, modern networks in New Zealand, but more of a value propersition, i.e. We have no real competition, it's more Value to the shareholders to spend less and charge more :-)
