I hope Maverick is watching all this - so many 'experts' with 'wide experience' in IT and associated fields - he could easily fill any vacancies on Xnet staff! Unfortunately some can't spell for toffee, but you can't have everything.

Wholeheartedly agree with "Xnet made the right decisions!" "Don't need off-site backup servers" (Cost so high you wouldn't have any customers left!)  But I do think that we customers could afford the switched answer-phone system for reassurance. (Extra 5c per customer per month should easily cover it!)

No one ever said it was the Telecom exchange.  WxC is also running an exchange, it just happens to be IP based.

Yea that is funny!
Do you get a credit/compensation every time your power goes out?

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Maybe next time they will schedule for the UPS to blow up. Just for convenience.

Maybe if you're that reliant on having a working connection, may I suggest you do what I do, and have a backup internet connection.

My home office is on ADSL with WorldxChange, and I have a backup connection with Woosh Wireless, with scripts that swtich between connections automatically in an outage. It costs me $30/month, but in cases like this it's worth it.

This is the third WxC outage this year, however the rather low cost of WxC means I can afford the backup connection, meaning hopefully it's only loose earth cables on power pylons in Otahuhu that can take out both services at once. (Man that was one hell of a day, I'm surprised how much failed that day, even radio broadcasts from the Skytower went dead when that happened)

Another backup option is dial-up with another ISP, although that means both connections are dependant on the same piece of copper and the same local exchange or cabinet, or you could get mobile broadband, which costs more but could come in handy other times too.

Build your own redundancy, that way you're in charge of it :)

So true. I have a TopGlobal 3G/WiFi router here. It provides automatic fallback - if the primary wired connection dies it will connect to 3G (both Vodafone and Telecom are supported you just have to insert your data card).

Internet is back up, VFX still down this morning... have tried restarting router and pap2t several times, rang help desk technical support, I was told to ring back later and speak to a technician (didn't I just ring technical support???)

hmmm...

Big fan of Plan-B options here... have a T-Stick at home which is now filling that bill for urgent online-requirements.
Also have a non-WxC Dialup option for when I get desperate.

Dare I say it, if youre relying on a system for mission-critical systems you should have a backup. Or a very expensive SLA from your provider. :-) Biggie Ups to those who've indicated they provide their own alternative means.

I have to agree with posters here that Plan-B option is the best.  If internet is mission critical for you at home (eg work from home or whatever), it is much cheaper to organise a secondary connection that you have some control over...  At home I have had 2x DSL connections for years, one with Xtra and the other with Orcon (and now XNet)...  I've never had a situation where both are down at the same time.  And there's always mobile if both of those fail.

If you need super redundancy you could consider a satelite phone, that way the whole of NZ's infrastructure could fail, and you'd still be able to check Bebo and Facebook.  ;)

If that all seems too expensive, maybe internet isn't as mission critical for you as you thought.  Yes, I'd love everything to work 100% of the time too for $50/month, but I'm just being a realistic geek!  Needless to say a business level service with an SLA attached would cost you a lot more than multiple connections...

BlakJak:

and as I said in the chatroom, I find it hard to believe that there isn't _something_ upstream of them who could redirect their 0800 number.  0800 is a service sold by Telecom isn't it? I found this - http://www.telecom.co.nz/0800 - I didnt see an 0800 service for sale on WxC's website. Perhaps I missed it.

WxC hold the 0800 12xxxx and 0800 14xxxx ranges

Hmmmm

I've posted a summary of the response WxC dealers received here for your information.
