You'd have to assume that a lot of people would be complaining about this if it were affecting residents in those areas so I'm guessing that the problem is just affecting people passing through on the train, which would indicate a network problem with handovers from 4G to 3G.

My brother in law also has an iPhone 12 and uses the train. He just believes it’s a crap network and that’s what happens. I don’t think he minds too much as he listens to predownloaded podcasts.

I suspect it would happen to all users on the train with iPhones (12?) but most people assume nothing can be done or can’t be bothered.

It’s the one negative with the iPhone 12/Vodafone. Connectivity in a variety of locations when on 3G is questionable, not just the train. As mentioned above, there’s light and day between my old Galaxy S10e and the iPhone 12 with VF 3G.

3G spectrum is getting refarmed to 4G so if these sites are 3G only then very limited capacity

This particular site I believe is 900mhz and 2100mhz 3G and 1800mhz 4G only

However given the amount of traffic now going over 4G, one or two 3G carriers should still be enough surely. My observation (in Auckland admittedly) is that VF urban sites are 1 or 2 carriers 900 + 1 carrier 2100. Would be surprised if even one carrier would struggle to meet the low demand on the 3G network.

Yes, but what if a train full of people is passing through and they are all attempting to use 3G because it's the only signal available in that particular location? That must surely put pressure on the available capacity.

I watch this thread with interest.

 Currently using an iPhone 12 mini on Spark. Spark sourced phone.

I am half way between Auckland and Wellington on the train and 90% of the time have been camping on 3G. This is despite being in 4G coverage both 700 and 1800. Only when we pull into major towns Hamilton, Te Awamutu does the handset flick across to 4G.

Trend seems to be when the train is at speed it will remain on 3G regardless. When it slows it only reverts to 4G. Could the issue be to do with speed... then again I don't have the issue when driving in the car.

Will be going past an 4G RCG 700Mhz site only soon so will be interesting to see what happens then.

Update from Vodafone

Tawa (Grenada) towers appear overloaded during peak times (when the train goes past).
Towers are scheduled for an upgrade 2022.
==========
This didn’t happen with my S10, and does impact most people i have asked who own new IPhone 12s.

So I guess we wait for an update from Apple 😭🤷‍♂️
