richms: How can you be defending an ISP that is selling a product called "High speed internet" that cannot even play a low quality youtube video at 2pm on a weekday without it stopping several times?

Go back to dial-up and you will probably not even reach the YouTube site. This is way off topic, the original post was requesting XNet to tell us what happened. It has turned into yet another thread dominated by a few people venting about the performance of a Mazda Familia not being the same as a Porch Carrera (or a Volvo S80 V8 if anyone knows what that is ;-).

Did you even read the first post, its directly on topic when they OP was complainging about.

A high number of disconnections and downtime over the last week. ISP email system not working properly ( I still can't check my Xnet address that I use as a backup). Poor international download speeds for months.

It is directly ontopic when xnet will provide no explanation as to their shoddy performance and other issues despite ongoing complaints about it.

Likening it to cars in your analogy is totally incorrect, its like selling a car thats a sportscar and it ends up not able to go up hills for most of the day. The name of the product is HIGH SPEED INTERNET - they are not providing that to people that have purchased it.

I can't think of any reason that someone would think that a connection that cant play a low-res youtube is deserving of the name highspeed in any form.

It's very clear what happened. xnet were cheap, for a long time they were good while they were building their customer base and, until everyone else in the world worked out that xnet was cheap and good. People need to accept this fact of life, and move on. I'm going to guess xnet now has their customer base at a level they are happy with and a pricing model that works for their target market.

They have two choices, keep the same pricing models and keep offering 'better' priced service (especially to those that are on a budget out there and can live with it being slow at times which is better than NO internet) that will never be what it once was. Or lift prices and try to compete with the likes of Maxnet/ICONZ etc who offer a more expensive (and SURPRSE!) reliable/faster service to people to can afford/need that level of service.

Getting back on topic. I hope that I get an email/snail mail from WxC valuing me as a customer and apologising for these issues, [maybe even some credit of somesort?] that would go a long way in my opinion to getting some credibility back with their customer base. I don't ask what went wrong.

No comment is not good enough, years ago when I was with TCL I got a letter from them when they had significant issues esp with Paradise email which was out for days over Xmas.

Most people used to use speed tests as their reference of performance. Then it was explained that speed tests are only an indication. Now most people use You Tube as a measure of performance, but that relies on which path the ISP takes to connect to the internet. XNet goes via AsiaNET I think (can't be bothered checking the details, it's holidays), which few other NZ ISP use (according to the interconnections diagram I've looked at last year). So our speed to You Tube is mostly determined by how XNet via AsiaNET gets you to You Tube. Some other video hosting web sites play without buffering at higher resolution.

Cars do break down or fail a WOF, so comparing the internet with cars is not irrelevant. Okay, two processors with the same part number do not perform the same. One can be overclocked more than the other. Or if you buy the military spec version it is the same processor but tested/guarenteed to perform so much better.

Regarding the heading of this thread I'm told there is a possibility of better informing in the new year. It is not for me to say anything more.

(The T6 is really nice, but the V8 is a Yamaha speedboat variant which is even better! Just watch out for the $1 000 + labour price tag for a seatbelt if it fails a WOF, my S40 did.)

We're taking it off-topic, but to finish off the comment: no it is $1000 for the belt plus an unknown amount for the labour. The webbing grabber explosives is part of the belt reel, not separate. Will see if someone can replace only the webbing for me.

Back on topic, from another post it appears that someone has downloaded 12GB in 8h so it appears the service is now good again. I would not know as I do not torrent and I do not use You Tube (the other sites I've used seemed fine all along), but glad to start hearing positive comments from heavy downloaders again.

I would agree, if you are not happy with a service from a provider, then move to another provider. However with Telecom based ADSL broadband, they are reselling a telecom service, so theoretically all telecom resellers should be providing a similar type of ADSL performance. If they aren't then they should be providing an explanation for the reasons why their service isn't up to scratch compared to other telecom resellers. Customers who switch from Xnet also now have to pay an early disconnection fee if you choose to switch to another provider. I believe being forced to pay a disconnection fee is anticompetitive, and means more people are likely to not switch, as it is expensive having to switch.

They cant charge a termination fee for it since they are not providing the service that they are claiming to offer.

Simply put, they would have there arse handed to them on a platter if they were to get taken to disputes over it and they know it, (so long as the complainent has a record of trying to resolve it) so they would be complete idiots to not let it slide. Then again, based on how they run the company anything is possible.

Right there are some things that people are forgetting here. [Regarding the speeds] I have had minimalistic problems with the speeds intl or nat I can still torrent at 500kb/s fine off peak and 250ish on peak (midnight to 8am). The issue a lot of you are likely having (and this is displayed on other sites for other ISPs) is that your exchanges are overloaded because of so many new broadband users in your area that telecom have not upgraded the backhaul to the actual exchange (This is the link that EVERY BROADBAND uses to get back to the central exchange there they are then sent off to their ISP) If this link is congested (some exchanges only have 2mbit links :O) then you are limited to what ever you can fight for on this link before you even get to the ISP so if the ISP is say able to offer you 128k speeds this may infact already be faster than what you are able to get from the link between your exchange and the central exchanges etc so basically your stuffed and there is nothing your ISP can do about it. - as in all networking - you are only ever as fast as the slowest hop.

In the ISP's accounting they might see that you are only using average 75% of what they can offer you at the time and that isn't enough to hit SLA's etc to warrant getting more intl bandwidth (as they dont see you using it because you are not even able to due to the slow links between the exchanges) - Now i'm not saying that you are all like this or that all exchanges are link this but it may well be a contributing factor in the speed issues totally unrelated to Xnet or another ISPs (as I know of several places where people are complaining about other ISPs' and its not the ISPs fault as they have plenty of bw to share round.

As for email being out for x days .... seriously who uses ISP email addresses O_O gmail / hotmail are free, offer you god only knows how much space compared to xnets what 10 or is it 100mb .... gmail/hotmail have better UI's and also the ability to link into many other features all with your email account etc and they are not likely to go down due to the huge server farms they sit behind where as xnet are only able to offer 1 or maybe 2 servers for mail - thus you should expect outages as they dont have the infrastructure to support major issues where gmail / hotmail would just remove the server and it would put 0.01 more load on the rest of them .... seriously .... you'd have to be stupid to use an ISP email these days with such better options out there that are dare I say it free.

So backhaul problems are magically avoided when connecting nationally?

People on the same exchange with other ISPs are not having the same problems?

My sisters on the same exchange as mum (ellerslie), her old flatmates connection is an orcon wholesaled one since the line had to be with telecom for freedom. It is so much better then mums xnet connection - both are FS/128k connects, similar sync speeds (7000ish)

With the number of people reporting international issues with xnet and not many with other ISPs then its clear it is not a backhaul issue.

I have jsut offered a plausable explanation as to why many people are suffering connection speed issues, (yes i have seen this exact thing on the same exchange so this is a factor). How many other things do you think can go wrong in a network infrastructure. How many boxes do you think your packets go through between you and the outside world (ie out of xnet) probably 3-4 switches, 2-3 routers at xnet, telecom's exchanges, etc. Any of these might be causing issues. But i do find it odd that people are experiencing fine speeds on their intl connections when others are not, when people have said that all your data goes through the same infrastructure so surely it cant be their infrastructure that is causing the slow speeds.
