I've never tried it but I wonder if going into the store and talking to someone who would understand the situation more would make any difference.

My neighbours cable fell down and she had the same issue being told to call the local technician, but they were unable to provide any contact details.
I have a contact though work for OneNZ now days and he was able to get it sorted for her pretty quickly.

Just out of curiosity: does anyone know if One still does HFC installs? New place I’m moving to doesn’t have it (not that I’m after it), and HFC wasn’t an option on their website.

Yes. The address might not be validated(when it should) but installs still happen. It's a request that needs to be made to the Setup team.

I'm not surprised getting rid of HFC installs is still a problem, and feedback (in my time) was pushed several times to make this process very clear and easy to do.

I shouldn't care or worry as I'm not a One NZer anymore and I haven't been for almost a year, but it feels very bad.

Nope, they'll probably just tell you to call the call centre, who in turn will probably tell you to call "a technician" without supplying any contact information for said technician - either that or they'll tell you to "call Chorus" (both of which are wrong).
