I too, just this last week have noticed a crippling mail issue (paradise) on cable. It is a connectivity or load issue with connection to smtp.paradise.net.nz and with pop3.paradise.net.nz. Pinging is not the definitive test of anything but it is usually a reasonable indicator - and pinging these two servers has a 50-75% success rate at the moment. It takes several goes over several minutes to download my mail, and if there are attachments involved then it is all over.

Perhaps we should start a separate mail issue thread...

Hmmm... This is not an issue known to us. Can you please e-mail me some ping stats and maybe a traceroute to the mail servers? I will escalate to operations Monday morning for investigation.

Glassman: Hmmm. Are you seeing 25% packet loss on a regular basis? (If that is the case, something is definetely wrong.) Do you see packet loss regularly or only occassionally? And to which locations do you see packet loss? All, or only some?

No, not regularly. I've been on cable for about 8 years, mostly it's been fine and since the VLAN segmentation it's been terrific.

Only this last week I have noticed packet loss - and only with the Paradise email servers. I only noticed it because the email service really has been failing (send and receive emails), so I pinged and noticed packet loss to those servers.

I am not suffering or losing packets to any other general internet services that I am currently aware of.

Just email.

Might be a server loading or email traffic related issue Olof. Pings are consistently fine to paradise smtp and pop3 servers now, and trace route is the same as previously posted. All this week when I have been having mail retrieval and mail sending issuea it has been between 7pm and 9pm.

On the e-mail issue. Our operations team is looking into this as of this morning. They have not been able to identify any issues so far. Will keep you posted if anything emerges. Of course, please let me know if the issues are ongoing.

ARP*seems* ok.

Email is *not* ok as of now.

Has been fine all weekend though.

What is slow with e-mail? Sending mail (outbound SMTP) or retrieving mail (POP3 or IMAP4), or something else? Would be great if you could provide as much detail as you have.
