johnr:
arnies: Yeah, texts are deleted after 72 hours. Same for Telecom

Thanks for that

Correct. Sorry John, but I can't help but say Telecom's numbers don't expire, same with your prepaid credit :)

The full T&C. I'm a bit dissappointed with this move, it reminds me of the CDMA original ageement, "you must top up a minimum of $50 every 6 months" however WCDMA is at least only $20 top ups (the $10 cards are being phased out)  A bit ambiguous is whether that credit "only lasts 6 months" or if it is in fact "carried-over" for a further 6 months along with the new top-up. If it does expire in 6 months regardless, It would be quite a pain.

Vodafone did everything to advise the user that their account was due to expire, I always top-up my rarely used SIMS once every 10 or so months just to give it a bit of chance.

Telecom T&C excerpt.

# Once you add credit to your Telecom Prepaid Account you will need to use that credit within a period of six months. Any credit not used within six months will expire and you will need to add additional credit in order to use the Services. We will not give you a refund for any credit that expires

# You must add credit to your Telecom Prepaid Account at least once every six months, otherwise your Telecom Prepaid Account will be deactivated. If this happens, clause 10.2 will apply.

If this agreement ends for one of the reasons in clause 10.1:

    * any unused Telecom Prepaid Service cards or vouchers you have will still expire on their expiry date;
    * any unused credit on your Telecom Prepaid Account will lapse;
    * any names, numbers and other information stored on your SIM may be lost; and
    * unless we agree otherwise (for example, if you have transferred to another Telecom mobile call plan covered by another agreement with us) or unless it has been Ported prior to giving up the Services, any mobile phone number allocated for you to use under this agreement will no longer be available to you.

NickiB: I am interested to see Fair Go tonight about people being charged off-network rates when they are mislead by the prefix. I was talking to a friend of mine the other day and he had NO idea number porting was even available, which I thought was absolutely stupid of him cos everyone knows about number porting, but apparently he's not the only one!

I disagree that this is misleading.
Mobile in NZ uses the 02 prefix as stated in the NAD, Each carrier is assigned a number after that for new connections.

You are right there is a common misconception however that is only because of how the providers used to advertise. I can not tell you the amount of times I have confused people with my 028 number. However at least with this I can be assured noone will assume incorrectly that it is with the incorrect provider.

everytime you check your balance on a prepay you get the date that it will expire. Its just poor management to let it lapse IMO - how hard is it to put the date into outlook or google to get reminded of?

OK back on topic....

I've been overseas in London for just on 12 months, and have my NZ vodafone sim card with me.
I usually put it into my phone once every 2-3 weeks to check for messages (which there usually isn't any).

On the odd occasion I would receive a txt, but usually nothing. And I would always wonder why I didn't get any.

So only now... do I hear about this 72 hour rule!
I've been checking messages for the past 12 months, when in fact Vodafone wasn't going to deliver them anyway???

Do I need to put my simcard in my phone every 72 hours to check?

Why isn't this stated on the Vodafone website, e.g. under Roaming?

I've just probably missed the last 12 months of txt messages, and now I finally know why many people have complained that they did txt me to my NZ number.... but I didn't receive it. Big DOH!!!!!

p.s.  yes eventually people would txt my UK O2 number, but still many people knew my NZ Vodafone number from the past 5 years.

On another note... should it be free to receive txt's on a prepay connection while roaming?

I did have an old Get70 plan, but back in Feb 09, JohnR switched this for me to prepay (to save me paying $20 per month to keep my number).

And since then my $5 prepay balance has dropped to $1.44, and I only put the sim in my UK phone once every 2-3 weeks, no calls made, and no txt's received.

Johnr was looking into this (when he was free)... but I'm a bit suspicious!

I was pretty certain receiving txt's was free on roaming... because surely they wouldn't be charged, and then deleted after 72 hours, meaning I pay to receiving nothing.

Yes, I was going to say - you have to let people know your new number. A number that you only use every two or three weeks is not really "connected". But you are already doing this, so this serves as advice to others.
