Only makes a difference if you are locked in to 114-117 kbps. If you are at 300 kbps, that's as good as you'll get until the network is tweaked.

Speeds are still slow in Dunedin. I'm sure the improvements will trickle south eventually.

Would be good if someone like johnr could quickly comment here to confirm that there has actually been a technical change to the network. If not, this thread is probably causing much amusement in vodafone tech HQ.

I did a speedtest today at northcote fully expecting to get the usual 116kbps but was surprised to get 800-1000kbps!

And I didn't have to restart my 3g to get it.. Is vodafone actually doing something right for a change.. Coz I was 5 days away from getting a XT sim..

Two answers:

1: we constantly make changes to the network and we're always trying to make things better with each change. Sounds to me like that's what's happened here. Glad you're all enjoying it.

or

2: The hamster was a bit tired and stopped peddling so we've given him a stern talking to, refreshed his waterbowl and he's back on deck, ensuring the wheel is spinning much faster than ever before.

I like the second one but fear the answer is the first.

Well today I had a dropout of a call on 3g on N97 - was talking on speaker phone and the signal was going up and down allover the place, and then just went down down down and then the 3 beeps. Thats in my room with LOS to a cellsite across the harbor. Good thing I wasnt on hold with slingshot or something where I had been waiting ages.

Also been seeing the signal and speeds flucuate wildly on 3g data so something seems to have changed recently. was always solid full signal and ok speeds up till now.

I just got a txt msg from Vodafone NZ asking me to do another speedtest..

Seems like T2 have found the cause of the problem and fixed it.. I'm impressed :)

Well I went out and did some more testing today with some interesting results which I'm not quite ready to announce (need to clarify a few things first).

But someone help me please. I just realised I have an oldie (but a goodie) 32K SIM which doesn't have the "3G" logo on it - will that affect my results? I still get 3G coverage using this SIM, and I am definitely beating the pants of GPRS.

I borrowed a 128k SIM and was going to compare the two but I struck a BIG problem ....

ignore what is displayed for the carrier only worry about what SIM is in the device

I had the same problem with my iPhone 3GS. It was on Vodafone as far as I could tell, but came up as Telecom in the status bar. No idea what caused it, but after a full restore(for another reason) it went away and correctly reported the network it was on.

Weird, just weird.

Johnr is a clone... we use letters instead of numbers to track them.

So, John R is the 18th iteration (not including the Original John).

Johnc and johnf were System 120-A2s which were always a bit twitchy. The new batch have behavioural moderators that mean they can't harm or by omission of action, allow to be harmed, a human being.
