From their status page:

==================================================
There is currently an issue affecting Internet access for all broadband customers (adsl, bof, xtend, landcorp, araneo).

----

Issue resolved. Sessions starting to re-establish, please be aware that it may still take 10-15 minutes to come back online as everyone affected tries to connect at once.
==================================================

Um, no. Still down here. 0800 123456 also still down.

Yeah still down here too. Their network status says no current issues too as they have moved the current issue to historic. They should atleast have the info up as current untill all users trying to reconnect are good. Smh. Posting from iPhone right now...

Came up briefly (at about 10am) here in Hastings too, still down now @ midday.

Appears they're having some routing fun! This is ping from another ISP back to my WxC IP:

Still down in Wellington area. Phoned Xnet 0800123456 about 10 minutes ago and they informed me that the problem may only be corrected in an hour or so. Mobile phone bandwidth is an expensive commodity so I hope that is accurate!

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

jahc: I wish I hadnt used ISP email as my main address for years. I will have to make the transition to gmail soon, so I can be ISP independant. :(

Out of one frying pan and into another... what if gmail is down, or closes?

.com domains are sooooo cheap (about $15NZ a year) or $30odd dollars for a .nz domain. Then point all the mail at your host of choice (including just dumping all your email straight to a gmail account.

Then you always have the address, and can move from gmail anytime without having to change your address.

I use the free Google Apps for Domains, its GREAT.

Can't tell if I'm up again or not - still can't connect to my home server but that can just be my modem not trying to reconnect...

I love how Xnet says the outage finished at 12:50 when my internet just came back at 2:20.

4 hours and 20min of downtime...

Cheers Xnet for the Great Service.

I know this kinda of thing is not great and it has definitely happened more often recently, but I still get the feeling it's a case of "you get what you pay for". Everytime I get the urge to throw a tantrum and move ISPs I remind myself why we're with Xnet in the first place. We still like the pay-for-what-you-use model...

Register a domain, point it at a provider of your choice.. set your email client to use IMAP but with offline/disconnected mode enabled so you retain a copy of all email on your pc.  Regularly backup your PC

You are now in a better position than the 99% of normal internet users.. great success!
