Not really but you can quickly tell who's having peak time problems by the amount of complaining threads on Geekzone, GamePlanet and elsewhere.

i play online game most of the days. i can host game for friends from singapore, perth, melb, sydney, dunedin and chch (10 of us) at the same time. we need a latency of less than 150ms to play with no issues. you must be misinformed by others or trying to promote telecom???

truth is, the 'only' reason why people choose cable over dsl is because it offers better experience.

Like I said - upload speed. Hosting games is mostly about having sufficient upload speed, which cable offers, and ADSL doesn't. However, most people do not host games.

No, I'm not trying to promote Telecom. I have cable myself, and I couldn't care less about Telecom, it's just that they have some of the best plans right now.

Interesting.... If they have the 'best' plan atm, why are you still using TelstraCable? On what ground do you think Telecom can offer better experience since you are currently NOT using Telecom adsl?

Because it's out of my control. I would switch if it was my decision to make. I say Telecom have some of the best plans based on the plan specs and, most importantly, the opinions of many forumgoers (mainly gpforums).

Telstra and Telecom (excluding Big Time which is shaped on purpose and pretty experimental still) have tons of capacity and don't seem to have the same peak time problems that Xnet, Orcon, Slingshot and others do.

The trade off of course is they have less flexible pricing options are usually more expensive ($ per GB). Also neither peer with APE/WIX so anything on CityLink comes from the US (eg: tvnz on demand, radioworks streaming radio etc).

I think Snap is an interesting ADSL option as they do peer at APE/WIX but also use TelstraClear for international transit (if I recall correctly), kind of the best of both worlds. Maxnet is another option who peer locally but who apparently have multiple different providers for international transit making them very reliable.

So if you're making a short list I would have on it and you have a bias towards not sarificing performance by going for the cheapest possible I would look at:

TelstraClear Cable
Snap ADSL
Maxnet ADSL
Telecom ADSL

Well I just signed up for TCL.
I will be very interested to note their performance to WIX as my telehoused system is all-but directly on the WIX.
I still fundamentally dislike TCL's policy around peering, but I guess I can't knock it until i've tried it.

Good on ya BlakJak. You won't be disappointed. Been a TCL customer for years. Apart from price increases, I haven't really had a problem with their service. Speeds are very consistent On my 4mbp 10G plan.

Was on the back of a Clear DSL link today, took the opportunity to trace the route to my colo.. dissapointing that it has to trombone to Auckland in order to get to a server which is less than a block away from the address concerned, but I suppose that's not as bad as going across to Cali...

(Server connectivity is via ICONZ)

ICONZ have direct peering with most large ISP's in addition to peering at APE/WIX.

It's all politics, they probably argue CityLink should pay to interconnect with Telstra and Telecom) since they have the vast majority of the market share / audience .
