Hmm...'By design' to make you pay a whole lot more.

It doesn't 'make' you pay a whole lot more.
Your usage is your usage & as with any utility company, you are responsible for what you use.
Should you choose not to monitor your usage then you can't say you were 'made' to pay more.

Telstraclear (in my opinion) has done some damn fine work. They've given more options to more customers for UCLL/Cable services than other providers have & they're not stopping there either.

Service levels are at the stage now that if you don't like it you don't have to use it.

Make your own choice.

To be fair though, most utilities are charged in single units, such as kW or m³. My local power company at least does not offer 25 kW blocks that get used the same way as TCL's. Although my provider does offer volume discounts, they're calculated every month and there's no "surcharge" for not using that volume.

That's a fair comment Behodar, but can you imagine what the whinging & moaning would be like if people got billed by say .75 per Gig.
So it gets done in bulk lots (volume discounts) & the bigger the volume the cheaper per Gig

I'd gladly pay $0.75 per GB! No whinging and moaning here :)

And just to clarify; I'm happily paying $11.95 per 10 GB pack at the moment and may change to the 25 GB option.

I logged into the usage meter and pulled up my last 5 months' usage, then calculated what each of those months would cost on the new 10 and 25 GB plans. I then totalled it all up and divided by 5 to get the average cost per month. On the new 10 GB plan it was more expensive (I don't have the exact figures on hand) and on 25 GB it came to $6.14/month cheaper than what I'm paying now.

It's interesting how the graph "condenses" as you use more packs, it makes sense when you think about it but it looked strange at first glance.

How is it a "volume discount" when it would be cheaper if it was just $0.75 per gig? Hell, even $1.25 per gig would be cheaper most of the time according to Ragnor's graph.

Just wondering for the TCL Customers on the Cable Network, these calling plans to me seem much better than what is on offer for "inhome", will they eventually be provided there also?

My dad just tried to sign up for this (switching from "old" PDQ/HomePlan to the new one) and apparently he has to change his email address in order to do so! That's too much hassle for him, so he's keeping the old service.

Being reliant on ISP email address is not a happy place to be, it servely limits your ability to change provider and in this case plan!

You should try ween him off the ISP email address on to his own registered domain. It's fairly trivial to register a domain and point the MX record the free Google Apps for Domains email solution.

Yeah, I'm well aware of the benefits of not using your ISP-provided address (I don't use mine), but I was just trying to point out that TCL is requiring users to change their addresses, which I think is stupid.

He's most likely got a Paradise email address. Paradise accounts aren't compatible with the billing system that Homeplan services use. He could keep his Paradise email address if he likes, but it'll cost him $10/month (20 hours dialup).

Oh, and Paradise doesn't exist anymore - soon enough your father won't have a choice :p
