He tunnels all traffic through the DNS port to his home ADSL account: This would never work

hmmm.. then tunnel it through the imap sever.... is it still free?
is the smtp free too?? request by smtp, response by imap...

nah, that's a little too cumbersome.

But to tunnel it through anything your still moving data, the IMAP and POP server are not free checking vodafone mail on vodafone live is free. I think (check vodafone website please)
