CDMA video calling is part of the new EVDO spec that Telecom will be upgrading to later on this year so Telecom potentially will have video calling by xmas time.

Considering how long it took to get SMS and MMS compatibility between Vodafone and Telecom, I would imagine that Vodafone and Telecom users will be able to make video calls to each other at some stage by 2009 if we're lucky...

Disenchanted: [nitpicking] "prepay" is a Vodafone trademark in NZ, on Telecom its "prepaid" [/nitpicking]

Actually, it's always been my belief that 'PrePay' is the Vodafone trademark, 'Go Prepaid' is the Telecom trademark and 'prepaid' is the generic term.

Grantis: As for Pre Pay customers being the only ones to get the extended Pay for 3 mins get 2 hours for free off peak calling during the week, it's unfortunate but it's not the end of world, I could think of a hell of lot of things that are far worse. Telecom Pre Pay customers were/are the only ones offered a "similar type" promotion, their on account customers weren't offered anything similar as far as I'm aware.

The Tel;ecom 3 min hour was only for prepaid...

That's what I said, but if you want to get pedantic, I should of said PrePaid.

Jama: Grantis you obviously do not understand a great deal about RF propagation if you think the gap between EVDO and UMTS coverage will close. 2.1GHz vs 800MHz - I don't think so.

All TCom T3G services can be used within 027 coverage. Whereas all Voda 3G services can only be used within 3G coverage - a big difference in quality of service.

I think Voda will be trying to squeeze every buck they can out of their users. After all if you invest $200M plus in a new network you need an ROI. Otherwise why do it? 24 month contracts do give some surety in terms of revenue.

Your right, I don't understand anything about RF propagation. However, what I do believe is that Vodafone UMTS coverage will increase significantly over the next 12-18 months & beyond, as they need to remain competitive & customers will demand it. From what I have read, at the initial launch of Vodafone's 3G service they were offering 36% in 19 cities/towns & I understand that Telecom currently offer 80% coverage (bearing in mind that Telecom do have a 9 month headstart.

As 'sbiddle' pointed out, when Telecom release Video Calling (supposedly by Christmas 2006) you will have to be in EVDO coverage to receive it. Funny though, Telecom were trashing Vodafones Video Calling when it first came out, stating that it wasn't what customers wanted, or words to that effect. However, I went along to one of the initial releases of Telecom's CDMA (by invite) & they were marketing it there, hmmmm.

Sounds abit like how Telecom thought txt would never catch on.....

Lots of carriers thought text would never catch on.

Of course Telecom would put something other than a positive spin on a service that a competitor has beaten them to - thats part of the game.

When Telecom launches video calling, it will be with far more coverage by a long shot than when Vodafone launched, so perhaps Telecom will push the merits a lot harder than Voda have (they have not marketed it any near as strongly as I would have though yet).

Only time will tell. Don't forget we are talking about 12 months here & anything can happen in that time. Without a doubt Vodafone will increase their coverage & improve their service performance to remain competitve & meet customer demand. Also, with the advent of HSDPA for Vodafone & Rev A EVDO for Telecom the contest will be very interesting indeed.

Both of these upgrades are largely irrelevant to most handset users though. Rev A EVDO is going to give video calling for CDMA but the higher data speeds are really only useful for those people who want high speed data.

Telecom's biggest advantage is that it can roll our EVDO coverage a lot easier than Vodafone can roll out UMTS coverage at the end of the day it's slowest sites will always be 144kbps whereas Vodafone only have GPRS.

I understand that 144kbps is only a "theoretical maximum" speed & is more like 70-80kbps in "actual reality" on average. Admittedly Vodafones GPRS is 56kbps on average though.

If all 8 time slots were used for GPRS this would speed up the service but no operator is going to do this. Most networks only use up to 4 time slots 14.4k X 4

56kbps average?? The maximum you can get out of a GPRS handset is 48kbps with a class 10 or class 12 device! GPRS average is more along the lines of 30kbps.

Ok, average was the wrong choice of word, but Maximum is what I should of used.

"The class of the device determines the speed at which GPRS can be used.

For example, the majority of GPRS terminals will be able to download data at speeds of up to 24Kbps (kilobytes per second). At the higher end, speeds are theoretically possible up to 171.2 kbit/sec when 8 slots are assigned at the same time to a single user. In reality 40-50Kbps.

PC cards capable of GPRS will send data up to speeds of 48Kbps."

153kbps max.

I have had 151kbps before.

More like 100kbps+ real world average (im a regular user of 1X).
