How much did you have to pay to get the cable inserted into the ground from the street to your house? Because Sky uhf was available since 1997 and Saturn TV was only available since 1999 so why would you pay probably $1000 to get your land dug up when you could just get sky uhf?

I've certainly never heard of Saturn/TCL ever charging a customer $1000 for an install.

Standard installation charges have always applied, with some customers paying slightly more if installs were complex. In many cases Saturn lost hundreds of $$ on installs in trenching was required. Somebody may have paid $1000, but it would certainly be an exception.

Sky UHF and Saturn TV were also two totally different products. 3 channels vs ~40 at the time.

I seem to recall an installation/connection cost of $45 for phone, $45 for TV, $45 for cable modem, and some sort of discount if you got two or three at once.

That's because they are not charging you the actual cost. Our install was free because we signed up for a year or two.

No different to sky installing for $99 or free, both prices are below cost but generally they make their money after your contract period is up (since it probably takes them most of the contract period to pay for the subsidised install).

Yip no different to any number of businesses. For example how do you think it is possible to get a cell phone for free? You are paying for the real cost of the phone over a longer period as part of the on going monthly charges. Same with TC cable.
We had the same thing with our first house. When we built the house there was no gas in the street. Later on the gas company put gas into the street and offered to put gas to the house for free if you signed up for 12 months or more.
