johnr: If the exchange is congested there is not much you can do about it and correct change to any provider and it will be the same

Actually johnr, I found that switching to the company you work for did wonders for my ADSL2+ speeds. But this was an evening congestion problem with my previous provider.

David.

Your other option is to share a neighbours internet connection using some fixed point to point wireless?

anyone gonna respond on the READSL question? that would be a simple solution here wouldn't it?

I believe you need to be on a certain line profile selected by the ISP for RE-ADSL2 to be enabled, there are a number of line profiles for DSL.  However I don't think all exchanges have support for it unfortunately.

Looking at http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps the start of Long road eg: 1 to 19 looks near the center-ish of the exchange area.

It must be an issue with your line back to the exchange.

There was an epic story of another guy who had a similar problem on GZ awhile back, he somehow managed to get Chorus to check the line thoroughly and they found a segment that was damaged by lightning.

what you could do is get a second asdl connection put in, see if they put you off the closer cabinet, because if you have a copper run that is 6km long to the port telecom will reject the request. this way you want loss your connection that you already have. just a idea

There's only 1 cabinet in the exchange area according to http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps

I don't know where the exchange is located in this area (coffeebaron may know), so it's hard to guess at estimating the line distance from the exchange and whether 60dB attenuation is indicative of a line fault or not.

NZFINEST: if you have a copper run that is 6km long to the port telecom will reject the request

Thats strange because I have ADSL and recently contacted a separate ISP to do a feasibility check on my line and they claim that it is 7309.8 meters from the exchange.

really and i take it you got it ???. if so what are the speeds like ??
when i use to work close to the group that did the feasablities they would reject anything over 5.5km i think it was.

Depending on the modem, filters, jack and what I have plugged into the phone line I can get up to 2.7 megabits download speed. Though, like you mention, it wasn't easy to get it on & we had to spend 3 months hassling them to get it. Our neighbor has to use satellite internet as he is in the "black" zone between us and the neighbor on the other side (who can get ADSL2+, lucky bugger). Also, the exchange is full.

Me           Neighbor  His neighbor
(ADSL1)   (None)     (ADSL2+)

heres the exchange, 10 McEntee road

now youl have a real scene of the distance .. going all the way out to the beach is somewhat unreal ... its basically 13KM from the exchange to the beach

hmmm so READSL is supported, any idea how to tell if our exchange would support it... i might ask vodafone if we can give that profile a try :D

i find my cicso router syncs a mbit slower so not really an option.. however my G604T is still going ... although its webgui is flaky now (think its dieing..)

i could almost say that it is one of those.. your placing of the exchange is slightly off though (just by a few KMs..)

OK so by road looks it really is ~6km from the exchange to Long Road, rather than just some kind of line fault giving the high attenuation.

Have to agree with Cyril, it's a miracle it works at all at that distance.

Look into wireless solutions imo.

one of the things im trying to get at is that it used to be stable at 900 back around 2 moths ago, and unless there has been any major landslides i would expect that the distance would be the same now as it was 2 months ago.

so what im saying is the speed is less than a third of what it was, but nothing else has changed. so clearly something other than distance is affecting the speed.

As I said earlier, once you go past a certain line length the stability and consistency of a connection becomes very variable for the slightest of reasons and I dont think you will get much traction from Chorus to look at it as its past a certain length. In Oz and many other countries any thing over 55dB attenuation will get a refusal to connect as its just too unreliable and vague to pin a commercial service on.
