Guess the MPAA /RIAA etc will be keeping a close watch for TelstraClear IP addresses on torrent sites..

Something tells me TelstraClear customers will not be happy chappies this weekend despite this offer. Download speeds may halt to a crawl. Let's hope I am wrong though.

I agree. the infrastructure should be allowed to run as fast as it will run in my view.

Then people should be charged for the volume of data they move.

But I can see the point. If you read the thread that Jabaw wrote the other day about straight line tcp speeds on Telstra from .us and .eu compared to Xnet then you can see how it could become a support nightmare from a cost POV quick.

Users are already moaning that their 100mbit service doesn't do more than 20mbit (though I do suspect that thread has a few shrils in it).

Providers have to take care not to market services that then result in revenue transfer to the helpdesk operations.

If Telstra uncap the Surf boards to 30mbit and no one ever gets 30mbit then ppl will just whinge all the time (well... we do that anyway), but it becomes a comcom issue if they go bonkers on saying 'up to 30 mbit' but then no one ever can get 30mbit in their own testing.

But then again ADSL has been uncapped and we all seem to deal with that ok. We get that in some regions the performance is not as good because of contended back haul and we get that if you're 1000m from the cabinet then your ADSL2+ won't be as quick as the guy 30m away, and we get that if you buy a cheap DSL modem then you get the results you pay for as well.

I can see both sides of the argument to a degree.

It's a bit like that silly bill board I objected to the other week though... It does erk me that they'd claim to be the fastest, not be the fastest, but have the ability to be the fastest.

So, ya, I guess I'll join you in wanting to seeing the speed uncapped.

What really gets me is that people don't seem to get that if you uncap speed you can drive more data at users and then use that to raise APRU. At least that's my assumption, but I'm guessing it must hit the wall in some way and users simply don't pay for more data.

Yes, and this happens when people use cheap routers than can't keep up with the line speeds for example, which is in no way the ISP's fault.

Totally... and I wrote "Yes I'm happy to concede that I got caught by that SPA2102. Lesson learnt there."

I did get badly caught on that one and I'm glad I post on forums for it so others can learn and people can just share their experiences without my putting it back on my ISP helpdesk to pick up the cost of figuring it out.

Of interest, the SPA will move data faster in bridge mode, but in router mode it's a dog. Very annoying.

However, having said that, if Telstra were to uncap the speeds then how much traffic would that push at hardware vendors for new kit?

These things have to go hand in hand in my view. As providers, we have to remember that we're not the only ones wanting to make a living. This is one of the issues around the PSTN for decades.

It's all good if you work for $Telco and can be part of collecting the big dollars (what's the current Telecom CEO on again?), but how many ceo.bigTelco.jobs are there?

MF you make revenue from ads and content delivery. Others here make revenue from the sales of hardware and others from providing middle services such as installing that new router or setting up that new computer.

My thinking, and I welcome comment, is that the more ads you can deliver more quickly then the more opportunities we all have.

So sitting us on 15mbit when we could be doing double with little more than a flick of a switch seems short sighted to me, though I do wear glasses and mine is only one view. :)

When I had DOCSIS3 installed here one of the questions was "can you have a gigabit router (not switch)?". I didn't have one at the time, but the Cisco SRP 521w did a good job of giving me as close as possible to 100Mbps. When I put a Cisco E3200 with gigabit WAN port I did see an improvement, but nothing that would make the SRP a "dog" (it is about 5 - 10 Mbps faster, which for people on 1 Mbps is a lot, but on a 100 Mbps is 10% of a lot).

I agree it would be wonderful. Still, there's a cost. Remember ISP buy bandwidth in Mbps, and sell allowances in Megabytes per month. Different steps and if they unleash everyone, then their costs go up exponentially.

Telstra owns the network end to end because they're vertically integrated.

Their primary interest is in extracting more APRU I would have thought.

At represent they're not offering me products that would extract more money. In fact in the last 12 months I've spent less and less.

r2b2: The more cynical person inside me thinks that they're performing an upgrade to the "data counter" and they don't have any backup ;)

A while ago, when I complained about the (sometimes long) delay before the "used" figure is updated, they replied that they were working on a new system, so there may be some truth in your idea.

It should also work as a means of showing customers what it would be like to have a higher data cap, so I guess that they are hoping it will encourage people to "upgrade" their plans.

Well, it's not like they went out of their way to tell anyone. I heard just today from a friend at work. I dont watch much TV, so I hadnt seen any ads, and I only hit the telstra page at the end of the month to see how much data I have left 8)
Mut keep a better eye on the tech scene here in NZ 8)
