Haa. Yea. The chorus van was parked outside the exchange before, maybe a little bit of tidying up being done.(It's not uncommon to see at 3 or 4 vans a day)

Bah, my move from Red Network to wholesale was scheduled for Friday, but have now recieved an update that there is no capacity at my exchange... so wait wait wait...

Bit confused though; Is that actually capacity at the cabinet? have they really run out of space(?) on it already given that it was completed fairly recently?

Here is an example of what can happen to ADSL speed when wiring issues are sorted out,

Speed goes from average 4Mbps to over 9Mbps

Ok, given that I have no idea how long I will be waiting to get onto the Telecom wholesale network (Is there any way to check where you are in the queue??) is it worth looking at a master filter installed before then?

I currently only have a single jackpoint, with filter, phone, moden plugged into that. My line stats are as follows:
DSL Status: UP
DSL Modulation Mode: NOT TRAINED
DSL Path Mode: INTERLEAVED
Downstream Rate: 2304 Kbps
Upstream Rate: 998 Kbps
Downstream Margin: 7 db
Upstream Margin: 9 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 41
Upstream Line Attenuation: 25
Downstream Transmit Power: 0
Upstream Transmit Power: 0

As mentioned in first post, I'm lucky if I get 2Mbps on speedtest and real downloads around ~200KBps are the norm, though I have noticed it up to 240 lately (wow :p )

Vodafone tech support suggested I was just probably just too far from the exchange at the moment to get decent performance, so would a master filter be worth it before I get onto wholesale?

Hi, I would always recommend a Master filter, its the only way (unless you have a single socket in the house) to ensure that you will get the most out of your line.

How much you will get if you install a filter, if you want a number,....... depends on how much alcohol you ply me with, no guarantees given.

I think what is important is that with 41dB you wont get much better than what you are getting. If you move to a cabint then lets assume the line will be less than 1.5km so you should potentially be able to get 10-18kb/s depending on exactly how long, and if your house wiring is good thats what you will get, if its bad it could be less.

Thanks Cyril, clear and helpful as always! In that case I will wait to get onto cabinet (looking at SAT map it should be within at most 300-400m of my house - and if it is where I think it is it's more like 250m) then contact coffeebean about a master filter.

Well, Looks like I am now on the wholesale network (was scheduled for this afternoon and net just came back after being off all day)

I had tried a couple of modems previously. Last results were from a linksys which now gives me the following:

DSL Status: Up
DSL Modulation Mode: ADSL2+
DSL Path Mode: INTERLEAVED
Downstream Rate: 14732 Kbps
Upstream Rate: 996 Kbps
Downstream Margin: 9 db
Upstream Margin: 12 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 9
Upstream Line Attenuation: 4
Downstream Transmit Power: 0
Upstream Transmit Power: 0

The above modem was faster before switch, but maybe a bit old for ADSL2+ because now slower and having issues with DNS, etc. The second I tried is a thompson, slower on Red network but now faster than the linksys on speedtest and reported bandwidth:

DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1.209 / 16.593
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0,00 / 0,00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12,5 / 0,0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 5,0 / 10,0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 13,0 / 12,0

So I guess with the above info, am I likely to see much improvement with master filter? I currently have just 1 socket connected in the house and no sky tv\alarm\etc

Hi, a master filter will not help get much more from it, 16.5Mb/s on 10dB with a 12dB noise margin is pretty much it.

I also mentioned earlier, if there is only one socket and the line is not split off anywhere then a master filter will not help.
