timsimpson: Like I've been saying - if people just chill out for a few weeks till VF get the network up to spec, and do simple things like set their pirate video leeching and updates to times outside peek capacity then we can all enjoy normal service pretty much for a next few weeks.

Dude, that would be the most awesome trolling if I didn't think think you were genuinely trying to be helpful. This has been raging on since December for some of us, the amount of chill available is getting seriously low.

I ran out of chill a long time ago. Luckily for me I got a letter a month ago saying fibre is now available at my house and have now been connected to myrepublic. Speed test last night at 930pm was 80 on there 100/20 plan couldn't be happier.

Pirate video leeching!? How about you get off your high horse and stop with the judgemental preaching.

The reason the peak period is the peak period is because that's when most of us finally sit down at the end of the day and want to watch some Netflix, do some online gaming, Skype family, process and backup photos, surf the net and generally mess around on our internet connected devices of our choice, using the internet connection we're all paying for. Suggesting we attempt to this all outside peak hours is, like your previous comments, ridiculous.

And If you genuinely think that shifting Windows updates to off peak hours will make any tangible difference, I'd suggest you don't have a clue what you're talking about.

If fibre was available here I would have ditched Vodafone a month ago. I know they're working on it, but the current situation is unacceptable and SLA arguments aside, I'm not getting what I'm paying for. If it's not resolved by September I'll be looking at the possibility of VDSL. It may be much slower overall, but it will kick Vodafone cable during peak hours.

invisibleman18: Got a card in the letterbox from Vodafone the other day saying that UFB is now available at our place (in Johnsonville, off Cortina Ave) and to call back to get quotes etc. I assume this must mean cable? There has been no work in our street to lay fibre yet, although there does seem to be some work going on down the bottom of Cortina which I thought must be for that. Also there are markings painted all over our street so assume something is going to happen soon although the Chorus website says June 2016 for our area.

Am currently on ADSL with Vodafone so shouldn't be a hassle to change. What installation is required for cable? We're renting up a shared driveway with 4 houses with 4 different owners - only 1 of which is owner occupied. So fibre is probably out of the question as too many people would have to agree to the driveway being dug up, and would have to get tenants to pass the request onto landlords etc. Was wondering if cable would avoid the consent process if it's already available or doesn't need a major installation. Should probably just call them back to ask all this.

Got a call back from someone and it is cable. Guy said it was just as fast as fibre, I asked whether you definitely get the speeds he quoted and he said you do and made it all sound amazing etc. Judging by this thread though I guess I'm better off stick with ADSL?

At least until September, if things get better then.

It's a great service off-peak, but if you're on a congested node it's pretty worthless on-peak at the moment. I'd take Mauricio's advice and wait until September, then check out this thread and see if we're all hugs and high fives before switching.

Thanks, will keep an eye on the thread. Going away on holiday for the second half of August so didn't really want the hassle of changing anything before then anyway. Fibre does seem to be making it's way up to our street at the moment, although being up a shared driveway with 4 houses and 4 different owners it would probably be too difficult to get consent from everyone. According to the Vodafone guy the house is already connected for cable so it would be an easier option if it's good.

All lies undecided (at least until September)

There seems o be a bit of luck involved, for some reason I have been unaffected with the congestion issue's so far with my speeds staying above 100mbps. Seems to be about location.

Nothing to do with luck

During the day the service is generally running full steam - I have no problem getting 80+mbps

In the evening when everyone seems to insist on using every bandwidth hogging application they can find, it screams to a halt.

The answer is simple - plan better - do your heavy DL's the night before while you're in bed. Lay off streaming TV for a few more weeks (it's not working right anyway) and have a little consideration for others.

VF aren't to blame - they are already rolling out infrastructure to deal with a load they weren't expecting till xmas - places like net flicks just got jumpy and released early.

The bandwidth is being used by users. it was more than sufficient to do everything we needed a few months ago....

The bandwidth is being used by users who pay for the privilege.

Of course Vodafone are to blame, they oversold their infrastructure. Netflix uses up to 5Mbps, a fraction of the 100Mbps connection I'm paying for. Every node should be able to handle the majority of connected users consuming 5-10% of their connection at one time. But it's not just that, it's the overselling of unlimited connections on nodes which clearly can't support that kind of usage. And Vodafone are still taking on new customers in areas with nodes too congested to handle the existing users. This is 100% Vodafone's fault. Where on earth do you get this nonsense?

Seriously, stop the preaching here. It's obnoxious, rude and unwelcome.

Most of the comments I've seen here were people switching to unlimited plans, which predated Netflix.

And I fail to see why some people should have "consideration for others" when no one else needs to? How do you decide who should be "considerate" and who shouldn't?
Do you do all your downloads at off-peak time? Must be marvellous to lead a life where you only use your internet at 3 in the morning.

I pay for the use of a 130 Mbps because I want to be able to browse some websites and watch a couple of episodes on Netflix. There isn't anything illegal or wrong with that.

That's like saying that we shouldn't be on the road during peak-hour traffic - true, but simply unavoidable for most people - which is why we have traffic peaks. I don't want to drive home at 11pm - sorry.
