Wow, I'm getting this now too. YouTube is actually working now. I can even stream 720p videos! It's going at about 3800kbps. I don't expect this to last ("whoops, sorry, we had a glitch where YouTube actually worked properly, sorry about that") so I'm making the most of it.

Interesting.

I still seem to be pulling from servers such as v4.cache3.c.youtube.com - but it is transferring fast enough to avoid buffering now.

Aaaaand of course now it's back to slow. Though it's better than what it has been recently. I can sometimes stream 320p now. I'm getting about 350kbps average (a good quality 320p video seems to be around 700-800kbps, so only low bitrate ones are streaming).

Most ISPs have the occasional glitch where something gets broken/slow. TelstraClear seems to be going for the opposite - the occasional glitch where something works right.

Edit: Last night I pinged a YouTube video host name I was getting from watching a video, and it resolved to a 2xx.* IP address. Now it resolves to 74.*, which is what it always was. I guess the 2xx one is the cache, which means the cache isn't working anymore. Maybe they were just testing it.

Techie: The posts on the forum show that the google/youtube cache is installed and pingable.

The question is why has google not activated it!?

Until the dns is sorted by google here is workaround using a hosts file amended from gpforums with the TelstraClear provided google cache address's.

I have done a basic test on my own devices and this has enabled youtube content to be provided via the TelstraClear provided google cache at very high speed.

I'm not sure it's up to Google at this point. It was working perfectly the other night. I tried the hosts trick with the TelstraClear cache IP myself yesterday, and there isn't too much difference. I think it's slightly better - sometimes I can stream 480p videos - I'm getting around 1000kbps average now. But I was getting a very consistent 3800kbps the night it went up.

Good point. It's not clear exactly what those Google caches are for. Are they for YouTube only? Or is Google able to push in other content as well (search, ads, apps)?

Uber, just out of curiosity, which proxy service are you using? I love Hulu, but ever since Hotspot Shield stopped working, I haven't bothered.

My understanding is that Google's cache boxes can be used for more than just YouTube. This quote from the article sums it up nicely (and explains why TCL needed the cache so badly:

It’s a win for ISP’s (less international traffic means lower costs), a win for end users (pages load faster), and a win for Google (faster, better usage).
