timsimpson: apologies to all for trying to have a moderate balanced positive and constructive outlook on it.

I guess you can all just go and grab everything you want and good on ya

You can't generalise. There are users who have a genuine use for their broadband. There are users who use this at night because it's the only they are at home.

Go have a read at the tragedy of commons to understand why this is happening. You are making it look and sound as if it's the customers' fault, when in fact is the lack of vision and planning from the provider.

An your sarcasm is not welcome.

Ive just downgraded my plan to 50/2 saves me $40 from the 130/10 plan i am not even getting close to 15/10 and some nights drops to 2/10. I did not mind paying a premium for a premium service. Last few months its just been a waste of money to me. I work all day then all i want to do at night is watch some online TV and play the odd game. Its completely screwed the winter for me I cant use my garage at night (its freezing in chch) to wind down after work.

Just now

Same thing here for me. I'm on 100/10 cable in Johnsonville (Wellington suburb) and experience great speeds and pings outside of 5PM-11PMish.

There is a definite routing issue as the ping fluccuations during this period are shocking: over any 10 second period my ping will jump from a low of 50ms to a high of between 500-1000ms. It just goes up and down over and over. This to me is more annyoing than the decrease in download speed.

9.20pm Wednesday night. Lowest it has got all night was 94Mb/s. Like I have said in earlier posts, I seem to be mostly unaffected by the congestion issues and post my speeds to help zero in on the problem areas, not o rub in my results. I'm in Woodridge, Wellington.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone else have issues with Facebook loading slowly on Vodafone cable? I've had a few other people complain about this issue specifically, and it was one of the first things that the guy that moved into my old flat noticed.

I just waited about three minutes for a page to load on my desktop, while it's all there within a second or two if I'm connecting over my phone's 3G. If my phone's on the WiFi, it too runs into frequent performance issues with Facebook. :\

Re Facebook slow to load. I have had a ticket opened a couple months ago for something similar, but impacting a raft of websites. Good speed tests, poor performance.

Ugh, it's really bad tonight. Pages are loading even slower than the speed tests may indicate. I have to finish some stuff up by midnight, and this really is not helping. Guess I should have just stayed at campus until 12:00, missed all of the buses, and made a 1.5 hour walk home in the whee hours of the night. I'd probably have more to show for it that way. *sigh*

It's taking ages to even open some basic PDF files.

I really don't even know what more to say. This is beginning to severely impact my ability to even do coursework from home. How is it getting this bad when we keep getting assured that things are almost sorted out?

Vodafone, you're beginning to feel a lot like Comcast.

Has anyone used this as a justification for closing their vodafone account and walking away from a term contract? I know if any of my DSLs were performing like that I would have left after a month of it happening to somewhere else.

My choices were ADSL or cable. When it works it works, ADSL would not keep up at the best of times.

I'm in the same situation - no fibre until 2019 - slow ADSL, and VDSL no faster than ADSL.

So I shall wait and hope undecided

invisibleman18:
invisibleman18: Got a card in the letterbox from Vodafone the other day saying that UFB is now available at our place (in Johnsonville, off Cortina Ave) and to call back to get quotes etc. I assume this must mean cable? There has been no work in our street to lay fibre yet, although there does seem to be some work going on down the bottom of Cortina which I thought must be for that. Also there are markings painted all over our street so assume something is going to happen soon although the Chorus website says June 2016 for our area.

Am currently on ADSL with Vodafone so shouldn't be a hassle to change. What installation is required for cable? We're renting up a shared driveway with 4 houses with 4 different owners - only 1 of which is owner occupied. So fibre is probably out of the question as too many people would have to agree to the driveway being dug up, and would have to get tenants to pass the request onto landlords etc. Was wondering if cable would avoid the consent process if it's already available or doesn't need a major installation. Should probably just call them back to ask all this.

Got a call back from someone and it is cable. Guy said it was just as fast as fibre, I asked whether you definitely get the speeds he quoted and he said you do and made it all sound amazing etc. Judging by this thread though I guess I'm better off stick with ADSL?

Had the guy knock on the door last night to try and get us to sign up. I asked about the speed as I've heard there are a lot of problems with it and he said he said we should get around 50mbps all the time. Showed me a screen shot of a speed test on his phone that was at 48mbps but I noticed it was from 11am so asked about peak time at night and he said it will be the same as there is no traffic management etc and went on about "boosters" on the line or something I didn't really understand. Said we don't want to change anything until we come back from holiday so he will contact me again in September.

Will keep an eye on this thread to see if things improve. They have started digging for fibre in out street this week so probably better off seeing whether we could get consent from all the neighbours to get it first.
