freitasm: Just a note folks... If you are using a third party DNS (OpenDNS, DynDNS Internet Guide, and others) then your network/PC won't get the IP for the local cache at TelstraClear.

I have tested with Google DNS and NSLookup seems to be clever enough to return the correct address.

Have they fixed their DNS problems or is this going to cause further issues?

Telstraclear's transparent proxy still has problems with CDN's like akamai when you use external third party dns.

Using 3rd party DNS servers has lots of associated issues that goes with it, no matter who your ISP is.

At least that was the state of affairs for months until I left them.

Works for me... Try using the Clearnet DNS, not the Paradise DNS.

Extreme patience was required.

Personally I didn't have enough of it to stick with Telstraclear for home ADSL back last year. Glad I didn't because by all accounts the transition to home plan (Telstra LLU) was horrible too.

One of work's connections is over Telstraclear fibre though still. I guess I can put off considering looking into Maxnet or Orcon via Vector fibre for now.

Speed is very inconsistent for me. Just an hour ago we couldn't get any higher than 800kbps on the test video, but now I can get up to 10,000kbps (averaging around 6000). And also now, on an unpopular video, I get a burst of up to 7000kbps or so every time I seek to a point in the video which hasn't been downloaded yet. It goes straight up to 7000, then over the next 5 or so seconds, gets slower and slower, settling at around 800. It doesn't seem to burst if the position just gets close to the buffer point, only if it actually starts buffering.

Freitasm. Sorry about that!

The TelstraClear Google caches went live around 1am on Wednesday, 5th of May. We have been working with Google to optimize the configurations since then. Please note that it will take some time before the caches are fully "filled up" and the full benefit is achieved.

On the metering question: yes access to YouTube and Google is counted as volume against your broadband plan.

Olof, thanks for the post... Please don't take my comment as something aimed at you personally. That was for TelstraClear as a company and the mentality reigning on the upper levels regarding communicating with customers.

You and other folks there do a very good job around.

I'd agree with that dealing with individual tech's/engineers has always been good

The ethos of the company and it's approach to customer service as a whole is another matter entirely.

So yesterday I removed the entries I had in my hosts file to redirect YouTube video hosts to the TelstraClear cache incase it started causing problems (eg if the cache IP is changed or they start using multiple ones, etc). Tonight I noticed that unpopular videos are back to being unable to stream at 360p. They come in from *.nonxt* or *.cache* addresses, compared to popular/cached ones which come from *.lscache* or *.telstraclear*. So I restored the entries, and unpopular videos are back to streaming fine (but still not as fast as it was when the cache was first turned on, as I have been saying lately). The cache must get forced to grab the videos (going at full speed) and pipe them back to me, acting as a proxy of sorts. I knew the cache wouldn't help unpopular videos (I said it a few times in this thread), so I'm glad there's a workaround. It's ridiculous that TelstraClear is not addressing this. I don't expect unpopular videos to be cached of course, but they should never go so slow that you can't stream them at 360p in the first place.
