BigPipe is offering a free month of no-strings-attached service to people that attended a local HackFest. I'm mighty tempted to take them up on that offer...

The connection is significantly less usable than that speed test may otherwise indicate. International bandwidth is slightly better tonight (I'm getting 2% of advertised speed instead of 1%!), but its downstream performance still pales in comparison to a connection that I had a decade ago. :\

I am still having peak time congestion issues, unable to play Netflix or Youtube in HD. Only two more weeks to go before the mentioned September fix - hope it improves by then!

I was chatting with a friend of mine today about the Google Video Quality Report on Vodafone.

Here are some more stats from TrueNet.
These are Wellington cable downstream speeds, averaged over 24 hours, for the last 7 days:

Note the recent downward trend.

EDIT  I should point out that I am getting better speeds than this, but am still getting a significant evening speed dip.

My flatmate came and knocked on my door to complain about the Internet. Shortly thereafter, Netflix started buffering at 235 Kbps. I didn't even know Netflix went that low! I had a connection in the '90s that could even sustain that. :P

Fortunately, it should all be over soon. We're at halfway through the month, and Vodafone has officially acknowledged the issue on their forums now.

Yeah, I restarted a few things and it improved quite a bit. It was still worse than usual, but I felt that my post unfairly exaggerated how bad things were since I may have been partly to blame.

Things are looking decent right now, just like most morning and early afternoon hours. :)

Connection's definitely a bit spotty still. I'm seeing some large fluctuations, even though it's not peak hour yet. I suppose it's still the weekend, though, so a lot of people are at home.

Out of curiosity, is there any likelihood that a spinoff of the mega $$$ voda are spending on upgrading the HFC network, that the 10mbps upload limit might be boosted, even if with a fee to match some of the fibre plans? 100/50 of 100/100 would be great - I'm finding more and more my need for quality upload far outweighs download with cloud backup services etc...

Another night of congestion. :(

Barely two weeks left in the month, though. Hopefully it's all sorted out soon!

For any company to spend a lot of money in upgrades means they expect to sell more and make profit to pay off that investment. Given the coverage - welly and chch, collectively 300k homes nearly all of which are or will be ufb serviceable soon - thats a lot of houses to compete on winning and retaining business.

So I hope DOCSIS4 is on the way... but then again recent performance doesn't really fill a customer with much belief that Vodafone cares about fixed services all that much. Investing only after horrendous customer complaint - and no doubt a tedious business casing exercise for upgrades - means it's been filling up and degrading quite steadily.... well before the complaint became public and embarrassing.
