The weekend was awesome. I have a full house load of gamers and heavy net users. We plow thru 80gig now easily (with zero bit torrenting). I applaud TCL for trying it to see how and where the network saturates, what issues there may be and how people found it. Tim your post is great.

One thread on geekzone does not represent the large customer base. I asked around all my TCL friends (inc ingame TCL people, neighbours) which is probably between 10-20 users.

Some were frustrated at gaming lag and just went and did something else (like you do when lag is bad and you have no idea why), some did not notice it, some leeched like a mofo, some did not know it was on. Very few were affected bad and none repeated the "angst" shown here by a few.

Not one was upset enough to call TCL. I wonder if the call centre load was even higher than normal.

When I called, someone picked up after 2-3 seconds.

I applaud TCL's innovative initiative in doing this.  It's clear that they thought the issues might be international bandwidth and purchased more accordingly but underestimated the pent up demand for content unleashed in one weekend.

They did say their national bandwidth coped but I did see drops in speedtest (TCL's) during the weekend from 15Mbs to about 5Mbs.

My only disappointment over the weekend was I had naively planned to watch a movie on Vudu that is only available there but the bandwidth available during the times I wanted to watch (before midnight) was such that it just stuttered and buffered too much.

But what TCL has got from this exercise is possibly a worst case scenario in terms of the amount of bandwidth they need to provision for an unlimited service.

Now wouldn't it be nice if TCL were to take that data, perform some extrapolation and come up with a real unlimited commercial plan. I might bite if the price were right.

when i called faults on Saturday morning, there was a recorded announcement stating that they had issues with broadband before the techs answered. It took about 5-6 minutes for a tech to pick up.

And you know this because?

Fact: I called Telstra Clear and cpmplained about the lack of service because of this 'marketing promotion.' EOS

mattbush:  I am extremely disappointed that TCL would even attempt such a risk.

lol....  I gave that feeling up a decade ago.

A little history lesson on Telstra...  they do these things from time to time.

mattbush:
It is also very naive to suggest that only some customers experienced congestion on international traffic and I would suggest that the word MOST is more appropriate considering the numbers who download large files from international sites as opposed to local, let alone how the gaming community feared.

You also use the word innovative in a way that actually really upsets me as did the weekend "trial". Only a small number of TCL users write in these forums and probably only a small number actually complain. The majority of TCL Users will tuck this "innovative trial" away in theirheads and hope the national broadband rollout happens sooner so we may dump TCL once and for all.

I'm kind of a bit surprised that more people aren't just moving back to Telecom or over to Orcon.

A decade ago HFC was cool, it was fast and it was the only option on the block to get 10mbit.

Today people do have a choice.  ADSL2+ is delivering 10+ mbit and clearly Telecom has put resource in their core network to deliver the fastest speeds for web browsing and a few of the other ISPs are not far behind.

The thread on Xnet straight line TCP threads was really interesting.

Personally I still want the upload speed and as Chorus are not putting the Annex M protocol on our DSLAMs my only choice is VDSL (which isn't in my area) or move to a wireless solution (which I'm working on).

I live in Upper Hutt and am on cable. I routinely get 15Mbps for Apple and Microsoft TechNet downloads, but was getting under 2Mbps (sometimes much less) through the weekend. I gave up watching YouTube videos because they kept stopping. In this case I had no urgent need for the software I was downloading, but I certainly lost the level of service that I pay around $100 per month for.

Here are my TrueNet data collected over the weekend:

Note between 2nd Dec 6pm and 3rd Dec 11am was when my DOCSIS3 modem was out of action, replaced with new one.

Whoopsy Mauricio - Those graphs aren't for public display...

From the Truenet site.

ps. in addition to that, I don't believe the 'response time' of 2500 seconds.

I'm not surprised if few people move. We're NZers. We have a moan but it's not really important enough to us to make a change or stand on principle. We just go with the flow.

It is likely that most of us like the idea of the free weekend, and only some of us were badly affected. I was put out but I'm kinda excited. I like to see my ISP, which has been rather moribund, taking some initiative and innovating: better pricing (tick), new feature (half tick) and new product (hoping).

Oh, well. Easy, I save 5GB of usage in my account and uninstall the probe ;)

It's obviously mislabelled and should be ms Tongue Out

I've posted some of my TrueNet graphs before and Jon didn't send the black helicopters.

I think that clause would be more to stop say mainstream media using the graphs without permission.

ADSL - auckland , Thanks telstra i wasn't impacted locally with any speed issues, internationally i might have been down to around 3-5mbps from 15mbps, but for unmetered access i was happy with the speeds.
