Fraktul: No offense taken. I do not work for Telstra Clear but I do have a professional relationship with them and most other network providers in NZ. Also for my personal Internet usage I would not use product of a company I work for regardless of whom that was.

Anyhow before this gets further off topic...I do agree with you to some extent Nic and please do not get me wrong. My point was more of the view that people sometimes have totally unrealistic expectations of network performance to the point that they are outraged that they cannot get what they have perceived they are paying for.

This was more directed towards MF's post that he was not happy with his 1MB/s download speeds, and as such should have been more specific. Chiefie and yourself appear to have a genuine concern which sounds like a potential equipment config issue (either CPE or edge network).

Damn, I had a whole post done, but I think the session timed out :(

cokemaster: I'm unlikely to check IRC. Last time I used it was, oh, 1995 or so, when I was working at ICONZ. :)

Fraktul: Fair enough, and sorry for the comment. I beleive the issue is with the edge network, as the techo changed the modem out when he came over. MF's 1MB/s would be nice, I must say - and defn not something to complain about.... :)

Righto :)

lchiu7: Been off this thread for a while. I just tested my 10/2 plan again (at 2am to avoid a busy time!) and at 8am. Best speed I can get from nzdsl and also speedtest.net is about 4100Kbs. Called up TCL and the tech actually told me to try nzdsl first which I did. He then asked if was using a router (which I am) and said to try it without (which I cannot do easily yet for obvious reasons). If the speed is still that slow without a router, he will escalate to a L2 tech. Will try tonight when I can get at the wiring more easily but I doubt if it will make a difference. I am using a Belkin A+G wireless router but my test is being done on a wired connection.

Well Larry, that's what I had... and insisting that the speed is still slow... but DO try without the router... After I upgraded the firmware to the latest available, it is operating at close to the "advertised" speed. The culprit has always been the router, (even when I tried wired connection with router.)

You can, but I have no idea if it'll make a difference. :)

This is _exactly_ the results I was getting, so I went back to 4/2. I've had a techo out, replaced the modem, tried it with and without the router, etc. The tech even used nzdsl/speedtest.net to test it :)

If I use under 30GB, which I usually, do, even with the overage charges, it's still cheaper than the 10/2/40. And for me, 4/2 is actually quick enough :)

Now I have to work out how to do QoS so my World Exchange phone gets top priority :)

The other thing is (although most of TCL cable customers here would be using router anyway...) is that you only use Ethernet and NOT USB when using it with LightSpeed plans.

I like my new speed, but the actual availability varies between customers/locations. I hope those who are on/requesting LightSpeed plans, be aware that you may not get the speed you desire, weigh the importance of whether you need more traffic allowance or not, the later consider should you get faster speed to compliment your monthly traffic allowance, or you be happy with lower speed and pay extra for traffic overage.

There are few hoops to hop through to get the speed "advertised", sometimes that may not worth the trouble to chase things up, but other time, it is worth the hardship to get what you deserved/pay for.

Good luck though.

p/s: I have a feeling that, when TCL "does" offer 25Mbit/s HyperSpeed plans, they really need to look into ensuring the mid-range plans (presumably LightSpeed plans) are up to scratch for the speed they're intend to deliver...

We I tried it without a router and it made no difference. Plus anyway there is no firmware update available for my router.

On the phone now with TCL. The guy did say I ought to get faster results than what I am getting now but added the usual caveat that it depends on how many folks are on my segment etc. Still at 2am this morning I doubt if many folks were on and the speed was no better.  If they can't resolve this I am going back to the 4/2. TCL should not advertise and sell what they cannot deliver to all customers.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

...

One of the reasons I upgraded was I was going over 30G so it made sense. But if you are going to pay for 10/2 you should get it else it's false advertising or something. I plan to go through the hoops and if need be, ask for refunds, credits etc. till it's solved.

They are now organising a tech but no idea what the tech will do since I have had techs over here several times regarding poor cable TV picture and all they do is check signal strength etc. Maybe I need a new modem?

Update:

While on the phone a senior tech apparently played around with the profiles of the cable modem attached to my IP address. They didn't give me more details but I have now achieved the holy grail. Check this out:

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I went thru 2 of those when the tech was here. Didn't make a difference. It was escelated to "network", but they couldn't give me an ETA - or even the possibility of a call back - so I downgraded.
