freitasm: UFB may be coming... But will be any ISP you are interested in working with providing the service?

Telecom are planning on offering UFB plans "soon".  Once that happens, I'm sure TCL & Vodafone won't be far behind.

freitasm: I don't follow bookmarks for this kind of sites. I usually just type in the address bar. So in the last five days, every time I type www.facebook.com it just waits there until it returns an error, then I remember "Oh, yes, this is TelstraClear, need to bypass their caches with https instead".

So, yes. Still a problem. No specific time of day, just about any time.

Hi

just checking if there is confusion,

I was not proposing you bookmark the URL for facebook.
Like you I only type www.facebook.com into the address bar

In this context, before I actioned the modification to the Host file I outlined in my last post, it just used to hang but now it goes lightening quick

FYI - I tried the HTTPs solution discussed here with little improvement to the hang time.

Cheers

There's no confusion. I was talking about other people who had changed their bookmarks from http://www to https://www which is a valid workaround.

Nothing related to a hosts file change... The hosts file would work fine, but not everyone is savvy enough to change this and if by any chance Facebook change their network later that address might be invalid anyway.

Another one with issue connecting to FB.
Pretty much as described above, slow to non-existent connections and having to click on things more than once to get something to happen on either machine connected to network and then to the interwebz via TCL Cable.
Other sites are generally performing as expected at the same time.
I'll give the https thing a go and see if that makes a difference.

Currently Facebook loads the main page but then it stops waiting for s-platform.ak.fbcdn.net...

Results:
Turned out my bookmark was already pointing to the https login page.  So that didn't change.
Turned on "secure browsing" in the FB security settings.  Seems to have made a reasonable difference and browsing is now back to where I'd expect it to be.

Having just posted the reply above the TCL tech arrived to have a look at the interweb connection.  Checked all the levels, removed a long forgotten attenuator from the back of the cable modem, replaced a few connectors and the modem.  Speed tested ok.  Level check out well within range as opposed to being on the limit.
Tech reported that I'd had something like 400 flaps in 21 hours.  Apparently it's bad to be flapping that much.  Tongue Out

All this thanks to a tweet about the connection dropping out and having been doing so more often than it had been in the past.

Good effort TCL, even providing a tech on a Sunday morning.  Smile

Wow, that is good service!

BTW: what's a "flap"?

A flap is something about when it drops off the network.  Can be from a very brief dropout that you won't notice to a longer one that you will.  I'm sure our tame TCL rep will answer that properly though.  Tongue Out

But yep, from Wednesday pm tweet to Sunday morning tech is a great effort.  Very happy with that.  Smile

Oh, a micro-dropout.  I've been experiencing those on my Vodafone connection at work.  They always seemed to happen around 9:30am every morning.  Happened for a week or two but haven't noticed anything for the last few weeks.

In the last couple of days pages are half loading, or the scripts aren't loading at all so there's a page but it's non-functional as you can't interact with any elements...
