Because the Wellington test server is provided by Citylink and TCL is not peered with Citylink so the traffic for this test server needs to go to some other network and back - sometimes to Australia.

Tuikapo: I should have actually quoted the post above.... but anyway. The one regarding Wellington Servers suck.

No --- I was curious about that. Its using a anycast infrastructure with hosts in Wellington, Auckland and San Francisco. Telstraclear Customers on the new IP ranges are with suffix .telstraclear.net are getting routed to USA the Latency is far too high for Telstraclears National Network. Trace the cname speedtest.citylink.co.nz from anyone with a cable connection on suffix telstraclear.net not the old cable.paradise.net.nz and you will find you're routed out to San Francisco.



If you read the thread from the beginning, someone mentioned it's because the Wellington servers is using a anycast host, with the servers hosted in Wellington, San Francisco and Auckland.  See the quote above for a full explanation of why is it so...
