I do not do lots of international downloads or videos, so was not too concerned with only 1.2Mbps international and enjoyed the fast national speed. But now I am also jumping on the bandwagon, because even my internet banking is getting too slow. The thing is, ANZ uses an international address (.com) and now it is loading just as slow as when I was on a dial-up connection. There is a significant difference when using my other 2 banks with local servers.

If WxC does not respond today, then I will be joining others in logging a help desk request.

The main reason why we won't continue to post on bandwidth is 2 fold, We had already posted what we do previously (Paul has given the company policy) and we have a schedule in place already with our provider for bandwidth to come on line that's ongoing, when bandwidth comes on line there will obviously be a increase in speed then, however there is always a trade off as more and more customers come online and generally this will continue to occur as more is added according to our requirements and terms with our international provider. But getting a balnce right between customer numbers coming online and the timeframes for an increase in bandwidth is tricky, our next allocation of bandwidth is in the system at present so should be online presently.

Just a point on speedtest btw guys, generally taking the speedtest to Las Vegas or New York isn't really a good test since we dont have a direct connection there

and dont really have any control over bandwidth to those locations so we would generally always completely ignore those posts as they are pretty irelivant, I notice the same people always seem to test from the the most distant places for some reason.

There are always going to be comments from the supportors and fans of any service providor as well as the detractors and we stand in the light more than others will due to our particiapation here, but there are times where we will not comment as I have said before,
Perhaps people do expect us to answer every question on how and why we do things, and while people have an educated guess on how we should do things if I responded to every little theory on how easy it is to manage a network it could get a little interesting, some of the comments are so way off the mark and the posters are so cetain that's how it should work it brings a smile to my face

but we are not going to jump on and explain every single business process and how the the network actually runs. but if it was that easy I'm sure a lot more people would be doing it

What this comes down to is a slow up in international speeds over the last couple of weeks, but we do have a schedule in place and has been for some time it's just that it wasn't due until recently , we are looking at the uptake of new services and had anticapted a takeup for fusion but actaully not this big an uptake and all these Fusion users came online very quickly but our ordering schedule was already in place.

I always test to Auckland and to Los Angeles, as thats where the Southern Cross Cable lands in America. Is this where your main peering point is in America?

Where should we run speedtests to?

I normally use Speedtests to Los Angeles as a benchmark because I think I'm correct in saying that the Southern Cross cable lands somewhere near there, and therefore presumably Xnet has a connection to the US backbone in that vicinity.

Is this a valid assumption?

Most people have been testing to LA, which is one of the closest international nodes.

I also want to add that your business processes and network topography mean ntohign to customers. We just want what we pay for.

I think you should show a little gratitude Mike.

How many other NZ ISPs would even bother to front up and answer questions from their customers in a public forum?

Many of us here appreciate the time devoted by Phil and other WxC staffers to answering questions and following up problem reports. We don't only hear about the problems, we are kept updated each step of the way until the problem is resolved, which is brilliant because it's building a Knowledge Base to assist with similar occurrences in the future.

Paul Brislen from Vodafone is the only other official participant in these forums who is making a decent attempt to do this, along with JohnR and Cranz who are very helpful and generous with their knowledge too.

If you think the grass is greener somewhere else, then vote with your feet and try it.

For myself, I have been a customer of just about every other ISP which exists in New Zealand. I was always hunting for a better deal, and also for better Quality of Service. And I didn't find any which satisfied me until I joined WxC / Xnet in early 2006.

That's my 2c worth anyway...

Yes, my international speed is again what it should be (over 6Mbps). Thanks Phil for the feedback. Perhaps next time posting that there is an increase in bandwidth on order? But then you will probably get so many questions as to when and how and why it is not there yet! Personally I am happy until it gets below about 1.5Mbps even though I am on FS/FS.

It's too early to judge if there's any improvement - the problem is typically a peak time issue.

From Linux box:

And I can't even manage a sustained 40kBps from any Sourceforge.net mirror (didn't try Optusnet, since it's flaky at the best of times)
The download starts at just over 100kBps (which is too slow anyway), stays around there for a couple of MB, then starts dropping until around 30kBps.
