I suspect that Vodafone will release the iPhone with its own data plan, as others overseas have done. In those other markets this was a non-negotiable for Apple, who didn't want the end user experience marred by excessive data charges.

Duh!
Read my post properly.

Apple have their own online music store...
Vodafone have their own online music store...
My statement, or more question, was which will prevail, or will they both be accessible through the Iphone

Apple have set the iPhone up to use their online music store, which is further revenue for them...
They don't like, and would not want, a competing service available through their own device...
Nor would Vodafone want to sell a device that does not allow users to access their own online music store, an additional revenue source, not have a competing service available on the same handset...

Just did a quick search on google, and this came up about the release of the 3G iPhone in Italy

http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/05/06/business/voda.php

So I guess we might be able to see a non exclusive deal in New Zealand with a 3G iPhone. I think the downside to this (it being non-exclusive) is that the telco's might not have exclusive data plans with the iPhone.

Now this is interesting...
IHB article: Apple is modifying its strategy of selling the device exclusively through a single operator in each country, in exchange for a share of the data revenue that iPhone users pay to their mobile operators.

So where is the incentive for Apple to push the provider into using iPhone-specific data plans like previously?  If the current plans are used, Apple gets a bigger cut.

/me thinks this is another hint towards non-exclusivity.

Because Paul probably don't want to be the leak on this information and have the Wrath of Jobs coming down hard on him...

The thought of Steve Jobs "going down hard on Paul" is traumatising to say the least! Wink

However, I bet my bottom $ that it will be a 3G iPhone, sif release outdated 2G technology, as sbiddle points out, especially with the large scale 900Mhz HSDPA rollout currently being implemented in areas around NZ that have never had 3G technology before.

Apple has previously forced other carriers to offer unlimited EDGE data for the sake of the apple "experience". Apple gave this as a main reason for choosing carriers to partner with (of course the other secret reason was they knew they could get more money doing it this way). Apples cut on your mobile phone bill is also around $200USD on top of the purchase price of the phone so I wouldnt see them giving this away in a hurry.

I still think it would be an exclusive deal with Voda NZ. Why else would vodafone be commenting on it. Voda wont care about getting a new handset unless they were making money off it. Just having a new handset is not going to generate any more revenue for them. I have not used my iPhone any more than my previous razr.

It seems pretty damn simple to me: Apple are going to release iPhone 2 as a freely available, unlocked 3G phone.  Sold via Apple Stores to anyone that wants to buy one, to use on any GSM network.

The "agreement" that Vodafone are talking about will be one based around lock-in and rebate.  Same thing AT&T is doing in the states.  They are doing a press release now to get interesting buzz, but there is absolutely nothing in the release that says "exclusive".  In fact I read it as quite the opposite: "Vodafone customers in [blah] will be able to purchase the iPhone for use on the Vodafone network."  Where does that even hint at exclusivity?

So you will have two options: buy for full price and stick any SIM in, or buy simlocked for a discount.

Source?  My common sense.

Sorry, my mistake.

In the USA, AT&T seem to have a music store of their own (http://www.wireless.att.com/source/music/). As far as I know this isn't available on the iPhone over there

Apple have set the iPhone up to use their online music store, which is further revenue for them...
They don't like, and would not want, a competing service available through their own device...
Nor would Vodafone want to sell a device that does not allow users to access their own online music store, an additional revenue source, not have a competing service available on the same handset...

My guess would be that the iTunes store would be the only store available - unless Vodafone start selling unprotected MP3 (or AAC) files, their existing protected WMA tracks won't play on the iPhone.

Oh, and 1st post. Welcome to Geekzone.

A Data plan catered for the iPhone would be great, but the current Vodafone plans are not too bad.

Would hope that the iPhone will be able to be purchased without contract if desired, not locked into any contract that includes a data component...

Hope to see it treated like every other phone, where the user chooses what plan (or prepay) they go on...but in saying that, one wont complain if there are special cheap data plans available specifically for the iPhone as well, as part of a deal with Apple...

I'm sorry? $12 for 3mb "isn't bad"? Dude, what planet are you on, that's downright criminal...

Yep. When you can buy 1 GB for $1 at some ISPS, $12 for 3 MB is abusive.

Yes I agree it is expensive, thats why I said "It isn't TOO bad"
Casual data rates are expensive, so are the plans but the base data plan isn't too bad. IMO
