Once set up in the 3g handset, can the sim be moved to something else like a GSM gateway or is it always tied to the handset its setup in?

After reading from the officail website, $30 for the "follow you diversion", do you think it is a bit too much on the cost????

Now if i am having the diversion, does that any additional charges for receiving the calls and so on???

As I understand it, the $30 is a flat fee. For me, this is excellent, as before I got my GSM gateway I was spending about $200 per month on calls diverted to my mobile.

I am wondering how long till we see a gsm gateway that will take the local numbered call, and then conference it into the best mate number on the simcard.

It may be possible to even do this on an application on a phone - I dont know never having programmed on a phone.

If it could that would be awesome, just pay them the $70 a month, and leave the sim in a 3 phone at home powered on, when a call comes it it answers it, then 3 way calls to the best mate.

= flat rate incoming anywhere in nz :)

I do this already with VFX, Asterisk, and a GSM gateway for plan cost + bestmate cost + vfx cost - but I see your point :p

I tried a GSM gateway to analog in my sipura, and the results were crap with echo and oneway voice and similar. Plus the horrid GSM buzz got into the ata even when they were 2 meters apart, and the GSM reception here is trash at the best of times.

If I could just get an old S60 based phone or something and leave it here with the magic software running on it then that would be so much easier.

Can anyone at Vodafone advise if a Nokia 6288 is compatible?, I see that the Nokia 6234 is compatible and as far as I am aware both of these phones have the same operating sys and both are 3G?

Question:

Is there a limit on the size the local zone can be?
e.g say a farm owner would want as much of their farm covered as possible and they jumped on the quad bike, picked up some speed then started the clock? or even worse, doing the same thing in a car going around a city block?
I know I'm being pedantic but just wondering how far this can be pushed

You walk around inside the house to set the zone. The movement makes it more accurate because the network sees how many sites you're attaching to as you go.

If you head out and go for a drive to get the biggest area you possibly can, you end up with a very inaccurate zone (attaching to sites that are quite remote from each other) and run the risk of it not working as advertised...

I would think that you run the risk of it not hitting a wierd remote site that you only get from one corner of one room in the house.

I still see te atatu on occasion on my GSM phone. Would suck to have a call come in when its on that site and end up paying the divert costs from the landline to the cell number because it thought I had left my home area.

I havent seen kumeu for a long time so I think they have sorted that one out ;)

Nifty but I'm dubious as to how it would work in remote areas. The whole STK platform and requirements for a high-end phone with the associated sucky battery life kind of limits the usefulness.
A family member was considering it tonight but she loves her simple Nokia 1100 with 1-week battery standby.

I'm sitting here paying betwee 5c-10c a minute from my mobile to most places in the world, I'll grin

and go back into my cave now.

If you really want to use a GSM gateway then the GSM<->SIP units really are the only way to go as they solve all the issues mentioned above. Portech do some really nice units which are around NZ$300
