Both those articles are almost three years old. Have you seen something more recently?
Note that I haven't seen or heard an official announcement from either the Government or Chorus that free installs will be stopping at the end of the year.

i suspect the free installs will continue till after the ufb program has finished in late 2022.
I've been on FibreX (and off as I moved to unserviced areas of Christchurch) since the Telstra days back in 2006. Initially it was an excellent service and was the fastest naked broadband offering available. There were times more recently when the congestion became a major issue and I considered dropping it once again for a fibre connection. That has been resolved now and congestion is rarely if ever an issue, the reliability over the last 18 months or so has been great.
Prior to fibre being available at my current property boundary I used a vdsl connection up till about 5 years ago, however this was flaky as f@#K and chorus/downers were unable despite multiple service calls to resolve crackling on the line which their testing showed was clearly on their side of the demarc. Dumped the copper dsl and voice and moved back to cable/fibrex and (despite the periods when congestion was a real issue) never looked back. I have fibre available now at my gate but have no reason to switch. I'll reconsider once they turn off the cable TV service.
Yes there is a slight latency penalty, but bang for buck you can't really beat it. I guess if the increased latency really bothers you then you should go fibre and pay the premium rate for a premium service, but for most users who are doing some web browsing, netflix streaming and voip phone service it's not going to be an issue at all.
I have an unlimited 200mb service which costs me $79 a month. With that I've got a free cable tv service and freeview recorder thrown in. Vodafones customer service is shocking, but I think most telcos are similar. Generally speaking I'm a happy FibreX customer.

Is that still a product they sell? I see "Vodafone TV Intro" with unlimited broadband and no voice line is now $97.99/mo.
It sounds like all the happy HFC customers are on grandfathered, cheaper plans than anything they advertise now. Which is a great reason to stay, if you can stand the poor customer service (yes, there are telcos with good call centres). But not a reason to switch, unless you can't wait for UFB or really want Vodafone TV.

Simply put, until Vodafone ditch this grandfathered plan, I'm not going anywhere
