xmltvnz does screen scraping which seems to work most of the time but can fail. I use the listings from mr.geek.nz/epg which apparently doesn't screen scrape but grabs data from other sources. I use that data to load into gbpvr

Has anyone approached TCL about using your own DVB-C device? Either with just the freeview channels, or with your own CAM (using the subscriber smartcard)? Or are they hard nosed about using their ADB3000?

I posted a question on their online help 3 weeks ago and have had no response.

As far as i know MCE2005 doesn't support DVB-C card at all.

Even if it support, you need to have MAC decoder to descrypt the TC's encrypted broadcast

I'm not using Windows Media Centre - I'm using Linux VDR, which does support DVB-C.

Question is, are ANY channels transmitted unencrypted? It seems unlikely that TCL would scramble ALL channels - that would cost THEM money

I think the decoder shows this frequency on initial boot up when it is scanning for channels. Can't remember what it is off the top of my head...

It's only the analogue FTA that is unscrambled. This is so customers who may be in a poor VHF/UHF reception area can use a splitter and plug the cable straight into their TV to watch 1,2,3,4 and Prime from any TV in the house. As I understand it the FTA channels on digital are scrambled.

yup i know that. he mentioned DVB-C which will be using Digital signal on cable. which mean it will be scrambled.

Wrong. Just because it's digital, doesn't mean it's scrambled. Multiplexed and QAM64/128 encoded, but not encrypted.
In England, US and Australia the FTA channels aren't encrypted and the channels can be 'scanned' without any manual keying. For instance, below is a sample of a couple of the German transponders :

The second number (394000000 etc) is the tuning frequency and the final digits (64:210:220 etc) is the location on the transponder. None of these channels are encrypted - and don't need a CI or CAM to receive/store the key and decrypt.

This is also, IMHO, the real beauty of digital (DVB-T, C or S). I can tune to one frequency per DVB-C card and simultaneously record or watch any multiples of channel in that bundle. Obviously the other big advantage is the digital signal is generally purer - even if the broadcast companies aren't sending great resolutions! With 2 or 3 cards you never have to miss anything!

I would think it's unlikely TCL is encrypting the FTAs. What's in it for them? It costs them expensive resources for every channel they scramble.

Incidentally, I had a note back from TCL regarding this. All they said was "I have received a response from our technical department and they advised that the PVR is not able to be used as the terminating device".
Didn't explain if this was a policy decision, or a technical limitation.

So you have a DVB-C card? Have you actually tried it with TelstraClear cable then?

Slightly off topic but (hopefully) TelstraClear should be launching their new cable plans tomorrow. I understand cable modem rental has gone and data caps and speed have gone up but as I understand it the national/international traffic charging split will not apply to new plans. It will be very interesting to see if this is actually mentioned anywhere, considering this was an original selling point and has now been in place since day 1 you would expect they would be clearly advising customers of this but I have reason to believe they are not. It would probably only be long term customers who would have ever been aware of this charging but it is something to be aware of particularly if you move large amounts of national traffic since it was charged at 1/10th rate.

If they ditched the modem rental I would be keen as mustard to get cable...
I realise this is a bit off topic, but as there is no root forum for TelstraClear I am not sure where to post TCL stuff. Is it worth the admins creating a TelstraClear forum? Just a thought...
