sbiddle: ... whereas Vodafone only have GPRS.
I still think it's strange not having EDGE in this country. It would make much more sense a fallback to EDGE than GPRS - which is unusable for anything that requires multiple connections.

I sent this email to vodafone 2 days ago and so far go no reply:

Customer (Simon James) 11/01/2006 04:28 PM
Vodafone's talk for 2 hours and pay for 3 minute promotion was great becuase it was avaible for everyone on Vodafone to enjoy.

I really don't like the fact that i pay $40 a month on my contract plan for 200 Vodafone minutes when someone on prepay can pay only $3 for 240 minutes to landlines or vodafone, it just doesn't make sense.

Vodafone always talks about all the value that is added to being on contract, but in this situation i fail to see the value.

Just thought I'd pass my opinion on that promotions should be for everyone on Vodafone, otherwise there are going to be a lot of unhappy customers out there (such as myself)

Yip, it is very whierd. We all know the Vodafone group has never deployed an EDGE network anywhere in the world and has an obvious issue with it. iI no other country however are they up against a CDMA network (except for Australia but CDMA never was and won't be a threat).

I was told that Vodafone NZ pushed to be allowed EDGE but where told they couldn't. It would be very interesting to know exactly what reasons there are behind this. We are probably never going to have UMTS coverage that mirrors existing GSM coverage unless 900Mhz UMTS becomes a reality however Vodafone could be offering EDGE coverage across a large % of their existing coverage right now which would actually give them an edge over Telecom. Telecom's EVDO upgrade has still required a lot of panel swapouts and upgrades of sites, the bulk of the Vodafone sites installed over the past few years could very quickly be upgraded to support EDGE as the hardware already supports it.

Excuse my ignorance on the subject, but what exactly is EDGE? Is it a much faster service than GPRS? Please explain.

Have a look at Wikipedia article - it should provide the details.

Since China is now blocking Wikipedia, I can't connect to it without resorting to proxies which have a tendecy of lagging - so I hope its the right article. Had to use Google to get it.

Thanks for that cokemaster. I could of looked at Google as well, but I was wanting someone to share their own knowledge of the subject. This will have to do I guess.

EDGE is an enhancement to the GPRS data packet service, I've used this before in the USA:

"EDGE is an evolution of GPRS, and improves speed by increasing the data transmission by using a method called Eight Phase Shift Keying (8PSK). It also provides link adaptation, meaning that connections can speed up or slow down depending on the radio conditions. Overall you can expect EDGE to be up to three times faster than current GPRS connections.

When I was using EDGE in San Diego and Los Angeles I got speeds around 130kbps, which is 4 times faster GPRS. EDGE requires special handsets (the i-mate K-Jam Pocket PC sold here in New Zealand is a EDGE handset) but it does not require a new network, such as WCDMA.

I wouldn't mind having WCDMA fallback to EDGE, instead of the bad GPRS service...

Thank you very much for the information. :-)

I wonder if there is an official reason that can be read on the internet, as to why Vodafone have not implemented this technology.

Disappointing at the response. I'm sure I could disagree with their statement but am struck down with a cold :( .

I got "... We really appreciate your feedback and value the time taken to contact us. I have forwarded your feedback to our Marketing Department. ..." in my response. Maybe I got the right person by luck.

I love EDGE, very nippy and great coverage footprint, unlike WCDMA which has poor penetration and is such a different network,, If I was vodafone, I would have installed edge and forgotten about Qualcomms "UMTS",
EGDE for GSM is what EVDO is for CDMA, a simple, cheap upgrade that supports excellent speeds that most consumers would not call "Slow" and business could send all but huge files over quickly.

The 900MHZ rules the roost I reckon, any higher MHz causes problems with penetration and "footprint"

EDGE only really offers half the latency of GPRS. So around 400-500ms. As we all know speed is only half the equation.

I agree that it is a huge improvement over GPRS and would offer a better coverage footprint than UMTS.
