Vodafone, (Paul)

I'm buying an iPad tomorrow, 3G, 64GB. It's the ultimate sales and marketing tool, with an excellent balance of portability and battery life by all accounts. Without a doubt, after it's first month it will have paid for itself.

As an existing Vodafone customer, I'm disappointed in what has been presented today.

Every single time there is an Apple product launched, Vodafone fails to equal the hype and satisfy it's customers. While I can certainly appreciate the implications of introducing an unlimited plan, or the work required to restructure all of your existing broadband plans I'm largely disappointed by the fact these new data packs have expiry dates on them.

What is the point?

Go on, justify to us why a package that only deals with small amounts of broadband data should be limited by time, rather than quantity of data used?

unique PR and revenue generating opportunity has passed by as we are left underwhelmed with no solution similar to the 12GB free range plan, that lasts 365 days. I, and many businesses I work with are the type to spend "$179NZD" on a flat rate 12GB pack.. Chances are, should I use that within 12 months, I will no doubt buy another.

Don't look at averages divided by your thousands of customers. Give us the OPTION to buy as much as we need so we stop AVOIDING youtube and other streaming services while using these devices on the go. Give us something that is UNIQUE to Vodafone customers. Something to BRAG about.

Think: This is a chance to one up XT's better 3G network compatibility. Missed.

I remain excited about the iPad, but once again (and perhaps for the last time?) my faith in Vodafone's ability to satisfy it's customers (including the loyal) is quickly coming to an end.

redjet: I really like the idea of not being locked into a contract and just buying when required.  I'd like to see different data packages though - in particular the data expiry needs to be extended.

In Australia Vodafone have several options for iPad data, but the two we really need here in NZ are:

6GB data, 180 days expiry - AUD$100
12GB data, 365 days expiry - AUD$150

http://store.vodafone.com.au/mobile-broadband-mbb-data-plans-for-ipad.aspx

I'd like to see longer data expiry's as well. If only because I might not use my phone on 3g for 2-3 weeks and then suddenly I have all this data I "have" to use at the end of the month, etc.

Will be interesting to see if 2dg's go that way. Even if they cost more per mb, but have longer data expiry's, I might switch anyway, since it would be up being better value.

The correct thing to do is to support the companies who listen to their customers. 2Degrees has a good history of filling in the niche gaps in New Zealand's telecommunication market and maintaining a consistent level of quality.

It's just a shame they're not a wholly owned NZ company. Still, I'll pay anyone for good quality services that meet my needs. I'm not unrealistic, and I don't expect plans to be tailor made, but almost anything will be an improvement on what was put on offer today.

Money is on the table. Go!

Exactly my point too.  It's all very restrictive when the iPad is not meant to restrict!

Lol your post just justified VFNZ position, even with your moan I quote "I'm buying an iPad tomorrow, 3G, 64GB" So you will buy one anyway. Job done as far as they see it. And as others have pointed out its not that different to the AT&T plans in the US.

How have they missed a chance to one up XT? TCNZ wont be selling the device, nor will they be selling micro-sims till August, XT missed the chance to one up VFNZ!

Exactly my point too.  It's all very restrictive when the iPad is not meant to restrict!

Huh?? Whether you are a fan or not, the iPad is one of the most restrictive devices made, hence the flaming it received from several corners...

MikeyPI, he's referring to data usage, not the iOS platform. The iPad encourages data usage, it is a data-centric device.

Actually no - Vodafone dont get anything when an ipad is purchased - the iPad is purchased direct from apple retailers with no vodafone plan attached - so any network operator can be used for its 3G connection (even regular 3G sim card can be cut down to fit in the micro-sim tray).

So vodafone will still have serious competition for ipad users (and we know that ipad users are likely to be people with money to spend). good on them for at least introducing some slightly cheaper plans though.

I'm pretty sure TC & 2D were just waiting for vodafones official rates before launching there offers. Interesting to see if Orcon offers anything....

Restrictive in terms of how users utilise it - can't use YouTube or any streaming services due to the lack of data.

I think 2 degrees are just going to smash these data plans apart in terms of price. What I hope is that they studied closely the part about no expiry, because with their existing data packs the only beef I have is the requirement that they are used up within 1 month (ie no rollover).

No doubt they will. They have been very perceptive in filling the niche..

^^MikeyPI, lack of data - paying too much for too little. 250mb plan is useless in my opinion. You can't go on YouTube, can't do this and that, when the device was made for multimedia, if you are on-the-go without relying on wifi.

Hey means by the crappy amount of data you can get.

Sure, if you fork out $50-70 a month (even if you don't use it all) then you can probably use youtube a whole bunch. But otherwise you have to worry about using too much data.

But thats purely subjective.. I personally find it a little humorous these people spending thousands on "i" devices, yet you guys cant afford the data for them?

The AT&T plans  (since everyone loves to compare us to overseas..) has almost exactly the same deal .
a 250mb plan and a 2GB plan. The 250mb works out to be $21.10NZ & the 2Gb is $35NZ.

Going by this A, it seems Apple dictate the plans & prices, and B) we (you) are getting better deal than the US....

Once again if you cant afford it, dont buy it....
