Hi john, are you able to clarify why this seems to keep happening? Seriously thinking about moving to XT.

It was part of planned work and someone tripped over a cable, (figure of speech)

human error not a failure of hardware / software

Outages will happen planned or not if they did not happen many people would be out of work including myself

So I've had Vodafone naked broadband for a few days and something that became apparent very quickly is that visiting international sites is never an easy experience. Just did a speed test to the nearest server (Auckland) and got a respectable 14.96Mbps download with 18ms ping - not quite as good as what I was getting with Telecom but still decent.

Anyway, frequently I will go to visit an international site and it might take in excess of 20 seconds to appear to start loading, and then may do so slowly. Other times the site will load just fine. Does this sound like a problem with my modem/router/computer settings or is it something that I will have to get used to? For the record my 1 year of Telecom broadband was virtually faultless and very quick, if a little pricey.

What modem, etc? Can you check your DNS is using Vodafone (this can effect the performance as they use a transparent proxy for caching)?

Its just the Thompson modem I got from Telecom and a Netgear router. Haven't received my "free wireless modem" in the mail so am guessing I will have to pick it up if I want it.

Not sure how to check my DNS..

Actually I was looking at my modem and router settings earlier today on an unrelated matter and noticed the primary and secondary DNS did not match between modem and router, so I transferred the modem settings to the router.

This issue was occurring before then so I don't think that's the cause.

Jeez, I picked up my free wireless modem from Vodafone and have been using it for about a week. The problem persists. I've called Vodafone maybe 4-5 times, only one guy knew what he was talking about. They've sent the details away for troubleshooting or whatever they do a couple of times, but don't seem to have fixed it. Most days are fine, but instances like now it just goes down. I've run countless tracert's to www.cnn.com which times out at some point along the line. UK and Japanese based sites are fine..

Does anybody here have any ideas?

i have been having the same problem for a long time and I also am on Vodafone Naked.  Also a lot of times I time out on Geekzone as well.  I had been thinking maybe it is my modem. I have a Belkin.  I rang vodafone once but they wouldnt help me because I had the Belkin andthey said they dont support it.  Maybe it is something with the naked internet system then.

Naked BB is the same as if you had a normal landline just the landline part is not connected,

What basic fault checking have you done isolation test?
What are the modem line stats?
Are you in a area that has had cabinets installed?

Right now we are looking into a speed issue that started on Sunday if your issue is on going then it's not related to this issue,

Quick Google search will show you how to get the line stats from the modem, This is the most important INFO required and what about an isolation test has this been done?  Google is your friend, You have the power a few basic key words

If you can't see the line stats you must have the worlds cheapest modem!

Hi johnr, I've got these figures, do they look OK?

Upstream Downstream
CurrRate(kbps) 1005 18040
MaxRate(kbps) 1005 21736
NoiseMargin(dB) 13.3 12.3
Attenuation(dB) 9.5 5.5
Power(dBm) 12.4 18.6

I can't tell if I'm on an exchange or cabinet using the Telecom site, but the map shows I am in a VDSL2 area that was completed in July 2011.
