What's this about? Will they hold the card if the terminal sends out a blinking message "HOLD CARD CALL POLICE"?

No conspiracy here. If you think about it what can often happen is the stripe is worn out and they have the "swiper" on their side. If they hand the card back straightway and they get a "read error", then they have to go through the hassle of getting it back and swiping again.

richms: Thats why I hate the old terminals where you have to hand over the card. I always try to get the card back before doing the pin entry but some cashiers are real funny about it.

My understanding was that the requirement for card readers was going to be mandatory as part of the EMV 5.1 cutoff in June, however this has changed and last I heard it won't now be mandatory until 2014 when every EMV 5.2 terminal gets pulled and must support EMV6.0

not really, they cant enter the amount in till the card has swiped. Its normally places with nasty non integrated POS systems with the terminals still on slow-as dialup that dont have a pinpad with the swiper in it. so there is plenty of time for them to reswipe and reswipe if their worn out piece of junk wont read.

I accidently left my credit card at the drive thru at Burger King a few years ago (if you consider that an "accident" - they clearly never gave it back and I didn't realise at the time, and went back an hour or so later and picked up the card. Within days I had a number of fradulent transactions occur on the card, which ANZ reversed for me. Whether they took any action with Burger King I don't know, but it did seem rather coincidental.

That is one of the big problems with the old terminals - I'm a salary slave at BK and the biggest problem is that the terminals we use require the person to hand over their card which more often than not results in the card being left given that one can't give back the card till the transaction has been 'accepted' by the terminal. The ideal situation to fix this would be to have the customer put the card in/swipe it themselves so that they get the card back straight away.

Is that a BK policy to ensure that declined transactions don't go unnoticed, or some other reason? As Mauricio wondered, why can't the card be handed back as soon as it is swiped?

I dont do the pin till I get the card back.

If their POS doesnt catch declined transactions then its a massive #fail IMO

My understanding from ~2 years ago was that one of the requirements for the June 2011 terminal cutoff (due to the new EMV requirements) was that every terminal also had to have a pinpad capable of allowing the customer to swipe/insert their own card.

It seems that along the way this requirement was dropped, and this will no apparently longer be required until the EMV6.0 cutover in 2014.
