sbiddle: There are still a lot of Australian ads appearing in 4:3 I've just got back from a couple of weeks over there and noticed a surprising number of ads being transmitted in 4:3 on the digital channels.

I stand corrected.

One thing that is great however is the TV guide's all indicate what shows are WS. I was slightly surprised myself at the number of 4:3 ads considering so many people now get their TV from a digital source.

I don't mind watching shows in 4:3 on a 16:9 TV but find the constant changing during ad breaks between 4:3 and 16:9 ads quite annoying.

The other thing to remember is that we are talking about ads. Sorry Tom, but I dont watch ads, I zoom past them, I have other things to fill my day other than watching marketing on TV.

lurker: Thanks Telstraclear for putting TV3 in widescreen, just noticed it today too. With the cable speed boost this is turning out to be a good week.

Just noticed today also. But still not as clear as the Freeview transmission

I appreciate the WS format that TV3 is now when seen on TCL Digital TV, however most programmes are still in 4:3 and for the weird reason, my TV doesn't stretch it to remove the black columns on the side, regardless what setting I changed to... annoying but hopefully all broadcast will soon be full WS compliant.

chiefie this is because TV3 transmit everything in 16:9 so you TV cannot stretch it as it sees the black bars as part of the image. If you read from the start of this topic I tried to explain this early on. Not sure how clear I was thoughEmbarassed

I agree, TV3 seems quite blurry and out of focus compared to the rest of the cable channels, even compared to TV1/TV2 over cable, BTW this is from a Christchurch connection.

lol I still like ads to be well made and in fact quite enjoy some of them. But at the end of the day we don't turn on the TV to watch ads.

TelstraClear:
  • C4 will not be available in widescreen until the Head End upgrade below is completed, due to lack of the correct equipment to support the providers feed.

  • We are currently working closely with Sky TV and TVNZ to agree on a possible interim technical solution to the quality of the feeds and also allow for the TVNZ widescreen launch, which is now delayed to approximately 22 September.

  • Our Head End and Architecture teams are planning one of the largest Head end upgrades in the last 10 years to expand our channel capacity and improve our technical capabilities in many areas including support for MPEG transmission. Picture quality improvements will also be part of this work. This is planned for phased introduction from late September 2007 to late October 2007. TVNZ widescreen carriage on InHome TV will not be possible until approximately mid October.

Jeff can you please explain two things for me.

First I notice that C4 is already wide screen. Has something changed to make this possible?

Also as for TVNZ not being switched to widescreen until mid October. Why does this need to wait for the architecture upgrade? You have other channels in Widescreen. I thought the widescreen image had the same amount of information but just had a flag to tell the TV is was 16:9 anamorphic .

Hi

You are correct.  C4 is now widescreen.

Our engineers sourced some equipment which allowed us to move on the C4 option on short notice.  You will notice the "What's New" web page is updated. http://www.telstraclear.co.nz/residential/inhome/television/digital-tv/whats_new.cfm

Regarding the TVNZ move to widescreen.  We are still considering our options for an earlier change to transmission of TV1 and TV2 in widescreen, however I am not able to confirm anything at this point.
