I could understand VF clipping VOIP but Huawei, what incentive could they have?
I can't really try until I have the VDSL.

Huawei made this modem for Vodafone New Zealand to their specification. Not really hardware spec but features.

If VF have requested to lock the ports and functionality then I think it's a bit short sighted and probably will frustrate customers. They will just buy an ATA or VoIP phone. One of the reasons I like VF is that their routers allowed me to VoIP without the need for extra hardware. Could it be VF have done it so you only use their VoIP solution on naked bb? Are the cost comparable to 2talk?

It sounds like a good idea on VF's part here, but they don't off a VOIP solution for naked BB home customers.

So that was a short stint to VDSL land. I am too far away from the box. VDSL doesn't even sync. :-(((
So back to ADSL it is.

Stink!
What is the speed you are getting on ADSL? I mean the line speed that's displayed on the modem.

My installation will be tomorrow, so finger crossed :D

I get ~1Mbit up & ~16Mbit down. So not bad for ADSL but I was hoping for a bit more. Will try cable now. Telstra said they couldn't do it but VF said it was not a problem at all when I wanted to do VDSL. So go figure.

Just signed up for Vodafone vdsl yesterday - but there is confusion so I'm half expecting to stay on vodafone ADSL (I'm on red zone at the moment).
Quick question about the hg659 though...
On my existing HG556, I was able to telnet into the router and run iptables commands even though it wasn't listed as a valid command (which I need to do to get unotelly working with my Chromecast).
Can anyone enter the busybox command line on the hg659 and see if the iptables command is valid? Hopefully busybox has been compiled with the iptables commands.
I'm still confused as to why the ATA ports on the 659 would be locked down. I've been using the ATA ports on the 556 since day 1 with 2talk - it has always worked brilliantly - maybe I need to switch to using a VOIP client on my android phones and just access the "land line" that way? Any thoughts?
Have there been any DD-WRT ports for similar Huawei models to the 659?
thanks!

I was lucky. VDSL is up.
36/10. But a speedtest will only go as high as 20/2.... Hmmm.. will see if it gets better in the next few days :)

That will be over WiFi, For some reason over WiFi with VDSL it never gets higher than 22Mbp/s download. I have tried multiple devices and AP's and modems. Just the translation from WiFi over to a DSL signal isn't the fastest.

Had my HG659 installed/connected yesterday and am loving it.

One question. Why do I get better download speeds using Lan4 as opposed to Lan1?

ie 40Mbps v 20Mbps?

DD-WRT or Open WRT, Not avaliable for the HG659, If so there are no drives, Hence no VDSL functionality. no you cant telnet like the HG556a, You only get as far as /shell into Busybox..
The VOIP ports are locked down to Vodafone as we dont support the service via another provider.
